CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG women's basketball team nearly overcame an early deficit on Wednesday night, but ultimately came up short in a 65-60 Atlantic Sun Conference loss to North Alabama.
West Georgia (15-9, 8-5 ASUN) fell behind by 15 points, but outscored North Alabama (13-11, 8-5 ASUN) 54-44 over the final three quarters. UWG ended the game 35.5 percent from the field despite the rough start.
West Georgia managed just two field goals made and six points in the first quarter while UNA connected on nearly 60 percent of their shots and built a 21-6 lead after 10 minutes of play.
In the second, UWG chipped away at the lead, thanks to Grace O'Gara and Destiny Jones who combined to score 20 of UWG's 24 first half points. With eight seconds remaining and UNA holding for the final shot, Jones got a steal and a big bucket. She would miss the free throw for the and-one opportunity but still took momentum into the locker room despite a 33-24 deficit.
UNA got their lead to as much as 15 in the third quarter, and took an 11-point advantage into the final quarter.
Sydne Tolbert, who was held scoreless for the first thirty minutes of the game, scored her first points of the night early in the fourth, a three-pointer to cut the deficit to eight and breathe some life into the Wolves.
At the 6:31 mark, Tolbert buried another big three to make it a 51-47 UNA advantage and forcing the Lions to call a timeout.
UNA's Katie Criswell knocked in her fourth triple out of the break to stop the momentum, but UWG's offense stayed hot as Tolbert poured in another floater and O'Gara hit a three-pointer to go under the 5:00 mark down four.
O'Gara hit another triple at the 3:27 mark to cut the deficit all the way to one, but UNA responded with a 7-0 run to go up 65-57.
Jasmine Jones had one more three-pointer in her, but it was too little too late for the Wolves.
O'Gara had a team-high 18 in the loss while Destiny Jones had 14 and Jasmine Jones and Tolbert with 12. All 12 of Tolbert's points came in the final quarter.
Destiny Jones had 12 rebounds to go with her 14 points for her 16th rebound of her career, and seventh of the season. Jones has recorded a double-double in each of the last three games.
UWG goes back on the road to wrap up the week, traveling to Austin Peay for a Saturday afternoon contest in Clarksville. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m. EST.
