CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Fueled by career-highs from
Sydne Tolbert and
Destiny Jones, the UWG women's basketball team won in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon, trouncing Austin Peay, 95-74, on the road in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
West Georgia (16-9, 9-5 ASUN) shot over 60 percent from the field for the first time since the 2008-09 season and hit 14 three-pointers in a win over Austin Peay (14-10, 6-8 ASUN).
Tolbert scored 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting with six three-pointers while Jones finished with 25 on 10-of-12 shooting from the field and was a rebound away from her fourth consecutive double-double.
The Wolves finished 66 percent from the field on 33-of-50 shooting.
Beyond the combined 55 from the duo from Louisville, Kentucky, UWG had three players, Grace O'Gara, Jasmine Jones, and Asia Donald, finish with 12 to give them five double-digit scorers.
Both offenses came out of the gates hot as each team shot 60 percent or better in the opening quarter. UWG hit four three-pointers in the first with Sydne Tolbert burying three of those and scoring 11 points in the period. Austin Peay led for the majority of the quarter and led 18-13 with 2:35 left in the quarter. UWG then closed the first on an 11-2 run and led 24-20 after one.
By halftime, UWG was still over 60 percent from the field, and hit seven three-pointers and led by 16 points. For the period, the Wolves outscored the Govs 25-15 and closed the half on a 6-0 run. The final basket came as Grace O'Gara went coast-to-coast and hit a layup at the buzzer, sending the game to halftime with UWG up 49-35.
Also of note in the opening half was UWG at the free throw line, going a perfect 8-for-8 while Austin Peay converted three of their four trips to the stripe.
As hot as the Wolves were in the first half, they came out of the break even hotter, scoring 26 points and shooting 10-of-14 from the field and leading by as much as 23 points in the period.
Tolbert made each of the first three baskets of the second half for UWG, extending the lead to 55-37 and forcing APSU to take an early timeout.
By quarter's end, Tolbert had already eclipsed a career-high, but she wasn't doing it all as Destiny Jones had already hit the 20-point mark by the end of the third as well.
Austin Peay opened the fourth on a 6-0 run to cut the Wolves lead to 15, forcing head coach Joanna Reitz to call a timeout to regroup.
UWG outscored APSU 20-14 following the timeout, cruising to their 16th victory of the season, matching the highest win total under Reitz (2023-24).
West Georgia is back on the road in Tennessee on Wednesday, February 18 taking on Lipscomb in Nashville. Tip-time for that game is set for 7 p.m.
