Tolbert Buzzer Beater lifts Wolves in Overtime Thriller

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- With just 3.1 seconds left in overtime, the Wolves trailed by one, backed up against their own baseline with conference implications in play. The inbounds pass came from Jasmine Jones, who calmly found Sydne Tolbert standing wide open on the wing. Tolbert rose up without hesitation and drills a three to lift West Georgia over Lipscomb, 66-65.

Riding the momentum of a statement road win over Austin Peay, the West Georgia Wolves (17–9, 10–5 ASUN) kept the surge alive. The Wolves followed up that gritty performance with an overtime thriller, knocking off the Lipscomb Bisons (9–17, 6–9 ASUN) to secure their 17th win of the season.

"That was a gutsy performance by our group tonight," said Coach Joanna Reitz after the overtime victory over Lipscomb. "I am so proud of our team and how they rallied around each other tonight to pull a tough one out on the road."

The opening quarter saw a duo led performance from Asia Donald and Gal-la Font. The two Wolves accounted for every point on the board, attacking the rim and knocking down shots beyond the arc. Donald set the tone with six strong points, while Font delivered from deep, knocking down two timely three-pointers that kept the Wolves within reach. Despite Lipscomb's 70 percent shooting in the quarter, UWG trailed by just four, 17-13.

As the second quarter began, West Georgia would find their spark on the defensive end. After the Bisons opened the quarter with a quick bucket, it was UWG's defensive pressure that flipped the momentum. Jasmine Jones ignited the surge with a steal and coast-to-coast layup, setting the tone and cutting the deficit to four. Moments later, Gal-la Font stayed hot from beyond the arc, burying another three-pointer to pull the Wolves back within striking distance. UWG slowly chipped away, trimming the lead to 26–24 before Sydne Tolbert delivering a timely bucket before the half sending West Georgia into the locker room with a 27-26 lead.

Out of the locker room, Sydne Tolbert wasted no time making her presence felt. She opened the half with her patented floater in the paint giving the Wolves a three point lead, Lipscomb would answer right back, and it would be a tightly contested third quarter filled with momentum swings and multiple lead changes. By the end of the frame, UWG had edged back in front, carrying a slim 45-43 advantage into the fourth.

The fourth quarter opened up with the Bisons, jumping out to a 7-2 burst to gain a 50-47 advantage heading into the media timeout. Coming out of the break, Destiny Jones provided an immediate response. She scored on back-to-back possessions, reclaiming the lead for the Wolves and shifting the momentum once again. Lipscomb, however, answered with consecutive three-pointers to stretch its lead to five. With just under three minutes remaining, Jasmine Jones knocked down her second three-pointer of the night. Moments later, Sydne Tolbert connected on a floater in the lane to tie the game at 56 with two minutes to play. The back-and-forth battle continued as Molly Heard of Lipscomb converted an and-one opportunity to give the Bisons a three-point edge. Jasmine Jones responded yet again, finding space on the perimeter and burying a clutch three to even the score. Destiny Jones would then come up with a steal late and draw a foul, converting one of two free throws to give UWG a one-point lead. Lipscomb turned once more to Heard, who was fouled and split a pair at the line to tie the game at 60. West Georgia had a final opportunity in regulation, but could not get a shot off before the buzzer, sending the contest into overtime deadlocked at 60-60.

Playing in its first overtime game of the season, the West Georgia Wolves showed poise when it mattered most. UWG fell behind early in the extra period, trailing 62–60, but quickly settled in. The Wolves chipped away at the deficit before Destiny Jones attacked the rim and finished through contact for a go-ahead layup, giving UWG a 63-62 advantage. Lipscomb would then answer down the stretch with a free throw and a layup to reclaim a two-point lead, putting the pressure back on the Wolves in the closing seconds. Forced to foul late in the game, West Georgia sent Lipscomb to the free throw line. The Bisons missed both free throws, leaving the door open for the Wolves to either tie the game or take the lead. As West Georgia's baseline out of bounds play unfolded it left Sydne Tolbert wide-open on the wing to get a shot off and drill a three pointer to give the Wolves a one-point victory in Nashville.

The Wolves once again had four double digit scorers in Asia Donald with 18 points, Sydne Tolbert with 17, Jasmine Jones finished with 12 and Gal-la Font rounded out the group with 11.
