EKU Colonels Outlast Wolves in Overtime

RICHMOND, Ky - Battling from down 14 in the second half, West Georgia men's basketball clawed their way back to force overtime against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels tonight, but ultimately would go on to fall 81-80.

Trailing 50-36 with under 15 minutes remaining, the Wolves (12-15, 6-9 ASUN) staged a comeback powered by Shelton Williams-Dryden dropping 16 second-half points, perfect shooting by JaVar Daniel and two more double-digit scorers, Kolten Griffin and Josh Smith, to force overtime with EKU (10-18, 6-9 ASUN).

Trading leads throughout overtime, the hosts would put themselves in winning position after cutting the UWG advantage to 80-79 on a jump shot and then forcing a turnover on the ensuing in-bounds pass to get the ball back with under 30 seconds left. Going on to knock down both its free throws at the five-second mark to take the lead, Smith would be forced to shoot a contested game-winner that would clink off the rim.

Williams-Dryden recorded a team-high 20 points, Daniel followed with 16, Griffin dropped 14 and Smith rounded out the Pack of double-digit scorers with 13. Montavious Myrick's 19 points led the hosts.

Opening tonight's road game scoring on inside attacks from a host of different Wolves, UWG and the Colonels went back and forth early on.

Capitalizing on a pair of steals, EKU created a 16-10 lead by the under 12 minute timeout.

After missing the last game due to an injury, Smith came off the bench and provided the Wolves an offensive spark with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one possession.

Forward Kenneth Chime followed it up with a thunderous dunk and guard Xavier Shegog added to the three Wolves' tally to give the Pack an 18-16 advantage by the next media timeout.

EKU quickly recovered, going on a 10-0 run fueled by four UWG turnovers in a four-minute span to take a 29-24 lead.

West Georgia trailed 34-28 at the half with Chime's six points leading the way for the Wolves. The Pack finished the first half totaling nine turnovers.

Powered by Eastern Kentucky's Montavious Myrick adding to his already impressive 17-point total and UWG going on a cold spell, the hosts pushed its lead to 50-36 through the first eight minutes of the period.

Despite being down 14, the Wolves continued to fight.

Similar to Smith's three in the first half, guard Matija Žužić's three-pointer after coming off the bench served as an offensive spark for UWG. Before the Colonels knew what hit them, UWG cut their lead to 54-50 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.

With Williams-Dryden coming alive in the second half, and Griffin, Daniel and Smith continuing to knock down their shots, UWG put themselves in position to take the lead before the final media break.

Finding Williams-Dryden open on a fast break look, the forward's layup completed the 27-11 run to give the Wolves a 63-61 advantage, its first lead since the five-minute mark of the opening half.

With time ticking down on Eastern Kentucky's final possession, Daniel swatted away what could have been a game-winner for the hosts.

Following the block, UWG came up empty-handed on their game-winning play, resulting in the ASUN action being tied 69-69 at the end of regulation.

Throughout overtime, the Wolves and Colonels traded blows back and forth until Williams-Dryden followed up his made free throws with a second chance tip-in shot to give UWG an 80-77 advantage with 30 seconds left.

EKU answered with a midrange two-pointer and then forced UWG to commit a turnover on the ensuing inbound pass. Being sent to the foul line almost immediately, EKU knocked down both of its shots at the charity stripe, reclaiming an 81-80 lead with under six seconds left.

Forced to move the ball fast up the court, Smith sent a last second contested shot that would clink off the rim at the buzzer.

EKU won 81-80.
