LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Game two of the West Georgia vs Little Rock baseball series resulted in a 4-3 loss for the Wolves, after the Pack walked ULR with the bases loaded in the 11th inning. The Trojans now lead the series 2-0.
Behind a career-best outing from Evimael Quiles, UWG (1-6) held ULR (5-1) to a 1-1 deadlock from the third through the ninth inning in today's road matchup. Playing in extra innings for the first time this season, the Pack surged ahead 3-1 in the 10th with a pair of RBIs from Patrick McCullough and Anthony Cole. Quickly recovering, the Trojans responded with three consecutive runs over the next inning and a half, capitalizing in part on UWG miscues to hand the Wolves a sixth straight defeat.
" Those three errors we made hurt. It's uncharacteristic of us as a team defensively," said head coach Jeff Smith. "We just got to keep plugging, keep grinding, and keep growing. We need to understand that we're never out of the fight."
Pitching in a career-high five frames, Quiles held the hosts scoreless, struck out one batter and conceded one hit and three walks.
Talking about his performance coach Smith stated, "He came up huge for us today. He was able to command the baseball and velocity was there. He did an excellent job."
Like with yesterday's game one, it took until the third inning for either team to get across home plate.Â
In the top of the third, UWG jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly from McCullough. Remarkably, this was the first time UWG led since game one.Â
ULR responded in the bottom of the inning with a base hit RBI to lock the game back up at 1-1. Â
Halfway through the third, sophomore righty Wilson Donnelly would be relieved of his pitching duties for Quiles.Â
Over the next four frames, the senior righty and the Wolves prevented the Trojans from reaching the bag. It was not until midway through the seventh that Little Rock made it to first on a walk.Â
After loading the bag with two more walks in the eighth, Quiles' career performance officially came to a close, with right-handed pitcher Rowan Park taking over.
With both teams tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, ULR was able to get base runners on first and second while only suffering one out. Thanks to a game-saving grab by McCullough at third and a pop-up to Landon Weidner in right field, the Wolves escaped to live another inning.
Entering extras for the first time of this year, Gabe Wuerth kicked things off with a base hit to left field. Only two batters later, McCullough crushed a hit over the outreached arms of the ULR right fielder, resulting in an RBI triple. Up 2-1 in the 10th, Cole brought his fellow Wolf home with a sacrifice fly to right.Â
ULR quickly recovered with a two-run base hit RBI to center, but would be stopped in its tracks before they could take the lead.
In the bottom of the 11th, a would-be third out for ULR was missed by the Wolves, allowing the host to load the bases. With a Trojan covering each bag, UWG walked the batter, resulting in 4-3 win for ULR.Â
Braxton Brooks was tagged with the loss after coming in the 11th.
The Wolves and Trojans return to Gary Hogan Field tomorrow to close out the three-game series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., and the ESPN+ link is tagged on the team's schedule.Â
