UWG Suffers 6-1 Defeat to Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - West Georgia baseball was overpowered 6-1 by Little Rock today in game three of the first road series of the season.

Holding the Trojans (6-1) scoreless for the first five frames, a four-run sixth inning and two-run eighth, pushed ULR past the Wolves (1-7) to go on to secure the series sweep.

"We had a good start from Zane Wright. I thought he pitched the ball well," stated head coach Jeff Smith following today's game. "The four-spot kind of hurt us. We just need to be able to get past those one-off innings. Try to minimize those innings. But for the most part, our starters did well this weekend. We also need to do better swinging the bats. We had too many zeros up there this weekend."

After lead off hitter Fano Cruz got on base with an infield single, the first baseman was able to advance to third following a ULR error on a failed pickoff attempt. Two batters later, Andon Lewis drove his fellow Wolf home with an RBI double to right field, putting the Pack up 1-0 in the opening frame.

This marked the first time UWG scored in the opening inning since game two of the Central Michigan series (Feb. 13).

Following five frames where Zane Wright and the Wolves held the hosts scoreless while only allowing one hit, the UWG defensive dam broke. In the sixth, ULR brought a Trojan home on a base hit to right field. Still not done with the counterattack, Little Rock cracked a three-run homer over right field to establish its first lead of the day, up 4-1.

ULR added two more runs in the eighth off a double and base hit that were both driven into right.

Little Rock would go on to win 6-1.

Wright was tagged with today's loss. Pitching in a career-high 5.1 frames, he recorded two strikeouts and allowed four runs from five hits and three walked batters. Notably, four of those hits came in the sixth.

The Wolves take a couple days to rest before heading back out onto the road to face Auburn this Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Talking about the matchup, Smith said, "Our guys are up for the challenge. We approach each game as an opportunity for us to go out there and learn some things about our club and get better."

NOTABLE NUMBERS
-In Maverick Torres' two innings, the sophomore righty did not give up a run or hit. Torres has not given up a run through three frames across a pair of appearances this year.
-Looking at the three-game series, UWG and ULR both recorded 21 hits. Little Rock outscored UWG 16-9. The Wolves made four errors and the Trojans committed one.
-West Georgia's losing streak now sits at seven.
