No. 7 Auburn Walks Off Wolves in Alabama

AUBURN, Ala. - West Georgia baseball fell 4-3 to No. 7 Auburn tonight on the road following a late surge by the Tigers.

Fueled by a two-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the eighth, UWG (1-8) led the top-ranked Tigers (7-1) until a pair of base hit RBIs in the ninth secured the hosts the walk-off win.

"I told our guys, we can compete. We can't worry about the name of the school, where we're playing, just play the game and these guys showed up tonight," said head coach Jeff Smith. "We made some mistakes which allowed them to have opportunities, but I'm proud of them. I think we're moving in the right direction with our play and I'm proud of the way they competed."

Thanks to a two-run homer by designated hitter Andon Lewis over Auburn's monstrous left field wall, the Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third of tonight's road matchup.

During the bottom of the frame, Auburn capitalized on back-to-back UWG errors to cut the lead to 2-1.

Following a leadoff AU single in the fourth, the Wolves put themselves in a dangerous position after loading the bases with back-to-back walks. Demonstrating great composure, Zane Wright pitched his way out of the jam by striking out a Tiger and then getting a ground out to third to keep the Wolves' lead still alive.

In the seventh, UWG got a man on third following a textbook sacrifice bunt by Jacob Bowman. Coming from third, David Bell tried to take home on an infield hit by Patrick McCullough, but the Tigers' second baseman threw the Wolf out at home before he could tag the plate. AU secured the third out before UWG capitalized on the baserunners left on.

Coming up to bat for the fourth time tonight, Anthony Cole ended his cold streak by crushing the Wolves' second homer of the night over Auburn's 37-foot left field wall in the eighth. Notably, the Tigers' green monster is only two inches shorter than Red Sox's.

In the bottom of the eighth, AU cut the Wolves' lead to 3-2. The Tiger who drove in that run was gunned down at second base by Cole from right field to secure the third out for UWG.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Auburn locked the game at 3-3 on a base hit to right. The next AU batter then cracked a single off the left field wall to drive a Tiger home and take the 4-3 win over the Wolves. Notably, Cole's throw down from left field resulted in Hank Smith's tag being inches away from getting the third out and forcing extras.

Lex Kenny was tagged with the loss. In two innings, he struck out one batter and allowed three earned runs.

The Wolves head to Mobile, Alabama, to take on the South Alabama Jaguars in a three-game series this weekend. First pitch from Stanky Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
