Wolves Drop Two Games Saturday in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. - The UWG Softball team dropped both games of day two's action at the South Alabama Invitational, falling to North Alabama and to UT Martin in the fourth of five games from the campus of South Alabama in Mobile.

West Georgia (4-11) was shutout by North Alabama, 5-0, in non-conference action before playing UT Martin a second time in as many days, and falling 3-2 to the Skyhawks.

GAME ONE
North Alabama took an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the first inning as the designated road team on the neutral field. UNA was aided by a pair of West Georgia errors, but did tag Cacie Cutright for two hits.

A hit by pitch and a single set the Lions up in the third and a sac fly scored the run, stretching the lead to 3-0.

The Lions added a fourth run in the sixth inning, cashing in a leadoff double and then used two hits and an error to add another insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Meanwhile, UWG's offense was limited to three hits over seven innings, with Jenna Samuel registering two of the Wolves' three hits.

Cutright pitched 4.2 innings and gave up just one earned run. Calli Hardison pitched 2.2 innings and gave up one earned. Three of the Lions' five runs were unearned.

GAME TWO
Delaney Hoyle's performance in the circle highlighted game two, and she took a tough luck loss as four UWG errors erased a two-hit complete game performance from Hoyle.

The Skyhawks small-balled for their first run, using a bunt single, a stolen base and a wild pitch to get their leadoff hitter to third, and later driving her in on a sac fly.

UWG got on the board in the fourth, tying things up on an RBI single from Jenna Samuel that cashed in a leadoff double by Ella Oswalt

After Hoyle did not allow a baserunner in the second, third, and fourth innings, three errors in the fifth allowed two runs to give UT Martin a 3-1 lead, and it proved to be the difference.

A hit and an error allowed UWG to get within one run of tying in the seventh, as Megan Waites scored on an error after singling to reach base. UWG had the tying run on third base but could not push the run across.

Hoyle did not allow a walk and struck out one over six innings of two-hit work.

The Wolves had five hits with Samuel and Waites combining for four of those.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Ella Oswalt's hitting streak came to an end at 11 games after she was held hitless at the top of the lineup against UNA.
- Megan Waites recorded her 100th career hit in the UT Martin game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.
- Jenna Samuel went 4-for-5 in the two games combined and is batting .500 on the season with 18 RBIs.
- Hoyle has been spectacular in her last two outings between the UAB win and tonight's loss to UT Martin. In those two combined, she has tossed 11.2 innings with five strikeouts three walks and a 1.25 ERA.
