MOBILE, Ala. - UWG Softball ended their five-game weekend on a positive note, knocking off Loyola Chicago, 3-2, in Sunday morning action at the South Alabama Invitational.
West Georgia (5-11) got three RBIs from their top bat in the lineup, Jenna Samuel, and got stellar pitching performances from a pair of freshmen in the Wolves' fifth win of the season. Abigail Helms and Cacie Cutright combined to scatter eight Loyola Chicago (6-9) hits and allow two runs while Samuel's 2-for-3 day drove in all three runs as UWG came up on the winning end of a one-run decision after falling in two one-run games earlier this weekend.
Samuel singled home a pair of runs in the first inning to give UWG a 2-0 lead. A walk and the first of four LUC errors aided in setting Samuel up.
UWG would make it 3-0 in third as two more errors put runners in scoring position for Jenna Samuel once again, and the junior delivered an RBI single.
Helms started and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one run in the third and finished with five hits surrendered. Cutright came on in the fifth and pitched 3.0 innings and allowed one run in the seventh to pick up a save. She gave up a total of three hits on the day.
UWG had four hits with Samuel recording two of them. Megan Waites and Dixiana Sims picked up the other hits for UWG.
