Wolves Open ASUN Play with a Win Over Jacksonville

CARROLLTON, Ga. - After playing the last 13 games on the road, West Georgia baseball celebrated their return to Cole Field with a 8-7 victory over Jacksonville University today in the ASUN opener.

Fueled by five batters recording multi-hit performances and a career day from starting pitcher Maverick Torres, UWG (4-14, 1-0 ASUN) jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the visiting Dolphins (9-9, 0-1 ASUN) by the fifth frame, but they were not home free yet. Storming back, JU tallied five runs late, but exhausted their outs before taking the lead.

"It was a good game one. I think our guys swung the bat extremely well," stated head coach Jeff Smith. "We had several guys with multiple hits, Maverick Torres comes out and does exactly what we needed him to. Zane Wright comes in and closes the door in the ninth."

Pitching in a career-high six innings, Torres gave up two runs and struck out a career-high five Dolphins to earn his first win as a Wolf.

"I'm super pumped. Very very excited," said Torres following the win. "We just went out and competed. Now we are ready for tomorrow."

Today's ASUN action kicked off with the Dolphins jumping out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a home run over the center field fence.

During the bottom of the first, designated hitter Andon Lewis drove in a pair of Wolves with an RBI base hit to right field to lock the game at 2-2.

Coming off a scoreless second, left fielder Anthony Cole put the Wolves up for the first time today with a sacrifice fly to right. Still in third, third baseman Patrick McCullough cracked a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Pack a 4-2 advantage.

With two outs tagged against the Wolves, Lewis crushed a 400-plus-foot home run over the center field fence, extending West Georgia's lead to 7-2 in the fifth frame.

Following a scoreless sixth, JU dashed the UWG lead to 7-5 on a three-run double to center field.

UWG responded in the eighth with an RBI single from second baseman Gabe Wuerth to push the West Georgia lead to 8-5.

In the ninth, JU cut the lead 8-7 on a base hit RBI that ricocheted off the UWG pitcher's glove and past the shortstop, allowing two base runners to take home. Before the Dolphins staged the full comeback, closer Zane Wright put the JU rally to bed with his second punchout of the frame.

UWG won 8-7.

The Wolves and Dolphins return to Cole Field tomorrow for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and the live coverage links are tagged on the UWG baseball schedule. Game two will not have a live stream, but game three will.
