Series Finale Ends in Extra Innings Loss

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball fell 10-5 to Jacksonville in extra innings of today's series finale. Wolves claim the ASUN series, 2-1.

With both teams unable to break the stalemate through the nine innings, JU (10-10, 1-2 ASUN) needed an explosive tenth frame of five runs to secure a win over UWG (5-15, 2-1 ASUN) at Cole Field.

"Well, with today's game, I'm a little disappointed," said head coach Jeff Smith. "We had opportunities. I thought we could have competed a little bit better in all phases. It's like I told the guys, we won't find out what that game meant until the end of the year."

Scoring on a fielder's choice RBI and another run on a failed pickoff situation, Jacksonville opened the series finale jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame.

It didn't take long for the Wolves to respond. During the bottom of the first, catcher David Bell crushed a double to left field to bring a base runner home. Third baseman Patrick McCullough added to the Pack's tally by sneaking an RBI single into right field to lock the game at two apiece.

In the sixth, it looked like a hard hit ball from JU was going out of the park until left fielder Anthony Cole reached up and stole the would-be homer to keep the game locked up at 2-2.

Following five scoreless frames, the UWG defensive dam broke in the seventh. JU opened their scoring attack with an RBI through the middle to jump out to a 3-2 lead. Coming in with the bases loaded and no outs, pitcher Davis Williams and the Wolves escaped the frame allowing only one more run. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, UWG trailed 4-2.

Opening the frame with three consecutive base hits, UWG put themselves in a great position to respond. With a Wolf covering each bag, back-to-back walks knotted the game at 4-4. Taking advantage of the juiced bases, McCullough smacked a sacrifice fly to right field to give UWG their first lead of the series finale, up 5-4.

Capitalizing on an RBI through the middle, JU would lock things back up at 5-5 in eighth.

In the tenth, Jacksonville's offense exploded with five runs courtesy of a pair of base hit RBIs, an RBI double and wild pitch that allowed a Dolphin to score.

JU took game three,10-5.

Rowan Park was tagged with the loss. Today he gave up two runs in his lone frame.

The Wolves go back on the road to face off against Georgia State this Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and the game is streaming on ESPN+.
