Wolves Knot Stetson Series at 1-1

DELAND, Fla. - West Georgia baseball's early lead led to the Wolves grabbing a 7-3 win over Stetson University in Saturday's conference road game.

Thanks to an explosive five-run second frame, UWG (6-17, 3-2 ASUN) created enough space to secure the ASUN victory and knot the road series at 1-1 with the Hatters (10-14, 2-3 ASUN) in today's game two. The series finale's first pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

"I thought it was a good game. Even though he didn't have his best stuff, I thought Lex Kenny threw the ball well. He was able to stretch it out there for six innings. We also had some guys that swung the bat well," said head coach Jeff Smith about tonight's victory. "We've got to stay locked in and focus on what our goal is. And that's to win the series and to not take anything for granted. And we've got to go out and compete, minimize any mistakes, and continue to keep the foot on the throttle."

Game two saw UWG get off to a hot start in the batter's box early on. Taking advantage of a pair of walks and a base hit, West Georgia loaded the bags with only one out in the second inning. David Bell immediately jumped at the scoring opportunity by cracking a single into left field to drive a Wolf home. Gabe Wuerth then knocked a base hit to the other side of the field to drive in another two runners and put UWG up 3-0. Still in the second, Patrick McCullough added a two-run RBI double to push West Georgia's lead to 5-0 on Hatters.

It took until the bottom of the third for Stetson to strike. With two runners on, both Hatters would make it home off a base hit following a UWG throwing error.

West Georgia responded in the fourth with an RBI single from McCullough to put the Pack up 6-2.

Two frames passed before Blake Bradford's single into left field brought a UWG base runner home.

Following their third inning scores, it took until the seventh frame for Stetson to strike again. With a Hatter on second base, a SU single to right field was enough to bring the runner home and cut the Wolves' advantage to 7-3.

Backed by solid pitching from West Georgia's relievers, UWG held on to win 7-3

Starting pitcher Lex Kenny was tagged with the win. In six frames, Kenny struck out a career-high six batters and allowed just one earned run.

"We pitched very well tonight. It was key to the game. Davis Williams and Zane Wright came in and had clean innings. No walks and only gave up a few hits there. And I thought they pitched well. They were able to locate and command the baseball. And that's what you've got to do when you're playing quality teams," stated Smith.

UWG and Stetson close out the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game three. Streaming and live stats links are tagged on the West Georgia baseball schedule.
