UWG Baseball Falls in Series Finale

DELAND, Fla. - West Georgia baseball was overpowered by Stetson University 10-6 in Sunday's road series finale.

UWG (6-18, 3-3 ASUN) battled hard in game three, but could not keep pace with the Hatters (11-14, 3-3 ASUN) in a back-and-forth battle that saw big scoring swings. SU claimed a 2-1 series win with today's victory.

"Today was disappointing. We came out, we scored first, but then we gave up four in a fourth, and it kind of just deflated the tone," said head coach Jeff Smith. "It's a long, long season and we have a lot left. I look forward to getting back and competing next week."

Similar to game two, the series finale opened with the Wolves scoring first. In the opening frame, Blake Bradford reached on a fielder's choice and drove in a run to put UWG up 1-0.

Unlike yesterday's game, it did not take long for the Hatters to respond. In the bottom of the first frame, a sacrifice fly to right field allowed a Hatter to reach home to lock the game at 1-1. With two base runners on, SU pushed its advantage to 4-1 with a home run over the center field fence.

Before the Hatters knew what hit them, the Wolves strung together a three-run swing to knot the game at 4-4 over the next two frames. Gabe Wuerth kicked off the UWG counterattack when he was walked with the bases loaded in the second. In the following frame, West Georgia added three more runs thanks to an RBI base hit courtesy of Fano Cruz and an RBI ground out from Landon Weidner.

In the bottom of the third, the momentum swung back the other way. With the Hatters now taking advantage of a base loaded situation, SU scored three runs thanks to a hit by pitch and a single to left that brought a pair of Hatters home. Heading into the fourth, UWG trailed 7-4.

Following a scoreless fourth frame, UWG cut the hosts' lead to 7-5 after Bradford reached home on Mason Cooper's fielder's choice at-bat.

SU would respond an inning later with a two-run RBI single to center field, pushing out to a 9-5 lead.

Stetson added another score in the eighth to extend its lead to 10-5.

UWG answered with an RBI double in the ninth by Bradford, but would run out of chances before staging the comeback. Wolves fell 10-6.

The Wolves return to Cole Field to host Mercer this Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
