UWG Drops Midweek to Mercer

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball fell 13-9 to Mercer University on Tuesday night at Cole Field.

Trading scores throughout tonight's midweek, UWG (6-19, 3-3 ASUN) stayed on the Bears' (21-4, 2-1 SoCON) tails until an explosive eighth inning put the visitors out of reach.

Showcasing why they are one of the top offensive teams of the mid-majors, Mercer opened the game jumping out to a 2-0 lead with a home run over the center field fence. It didn't take long for the Wolves to respond. In the bottom of the first, Blake Bradford drove a runner home from third to cut the Bears' advantage to 2-1.

Continuing to stay hot in the second, Mercer extended its lead to 3-1 off a ground out to short that allowed a Bear to reach home. Moving to the bottom of the frame, Gabe Young took advantage of the two base runners on by crushing a home run over center field, giving the Wolves a 4-3 advantage.

Keeping the scoring streak alive, the Bears exploded in the third frame with five runs fueled by a steal home, a two-run homer, an RBI on a ground out and an RBI double. Wolves trailed 8-4 heading into the bottom of the third.

Following a scoreless fourth frame, Mercer tallied its third home run of the day to extend its lead to 9-4. In the bottom of the fifth, UWG cut the visitors' lead to 9-6 thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles courtesy of David Bell and Young.

During the sixth, Patrick McCullough crushed a home run to dash the Mercer lead to 9-7.

Neither team would score in the seventh, but Mercer pushed its lead to 13-7 in the eighth off three RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly RBI.

UWG added two more runs off another RBI double from Bell in the ninth before falling 13-9.

The Wolves go on the road to play Queens in a three-game ASUN series this weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
