Wolves Score Six Straight to Secure Road Win

CHARLOTTE, NC - Fueled by six unanswered scores, West Georgia baseball powered their way to a 10-9 victory over Queens University in Friday night's series opener.

Down 8-4 heading into the seventh frame, UWG (7-19, 4-3 ASUN) looked to stellar pitching and red-hot hitting to score six unanswered runs, only broken up by a rain delay, to kick off the ASUN road series with a win against Queens (6-18, 2-5 ASUN).

"I'm proud of the team for the way they came back and fought through some challenges there," stated head coach Jeff Smith. "We just didn't pitch great early in the game, but we were able to battle back. We had Josh Lanum come in and get us out of an inning. Grant Edwards and Zane Wright came in and pitched extremely well, and we had some clutch hitting tonight. So yeah, it was a good, hard-fought one. The team had to overcome that deficit to get the win."

With a pair of Wolves covering the bases, designated hitter Andon Lewis opened today's game driving a runner home on a single to left field, giving UWG a 1-0 lead. Thanks to a failed pickoff attempt on a Lewis steal to second, UWG pushed its advantage to 2-0 on a catcher's throwing error that allowed a UWG base runner to take home.

In the bottom of the first, Queens capitalized with the bases loaded by hitting a grand slam to take a 4-2 lead over the Wolves.

A single to center pushed the Royals ahead to 5-2 in the following frame.

During the third inning, Blake Bradford crushed a home run and Fano Cruz drove a runner home to cut the deficit to 5-4, but the hosts responded in the fourth with a solo homer to establish a two-run lead.

The fifth saw Queens' lead balloon to 7-4 off a double to left field.

UWG looked like they were going to strike when they loaded the bases in the sixth, however, a Royals strikeout stopped the Wolves from scoring.

Still in the sixth, the Royals pushed their advantage to 8-4 with an RBI single.

After being held scoreless since the fourth, the Wolves came alive in the seventh inning with a pair of RBI base hits from David Bell and Patrick McCullough, as well as a sacrifice fly from Lewis.

With the Wolves on the Royals' tails, down 8-7, the game would slow to a stop down due to a rain delay.

Coming out of the break, Bell singled to left field to lock the game at 8-8 in the eighth.

UWG continued its scoring streak thanks to Anthony Cole and Cruz recording base hit RBIs to give the Wolves a 10-8 lead in the ninth.

During the bottom of the frame, Queens scored one run but was stopped before they could take the lead.

UWG won 10-9.

The Wolves and Royals return to The Stick Williams Dream Fields tomorrow for game two. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., and the live stats link is tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.
