CHARLOTTE, Nc. - The West Georgia softball team traveled to Charlotte this weekend to face the Queens Royals in a Saturday doubleheader. The Wolves dropped game one 7-2 to the Royals, but turned around the day by taking game two 4-3.
West Georgia (11-20, 3-2 ASUN) was unable to stop the Royals bats in game one, but escaped a last minute jam in game two over Queens (8-17, 1-4 ASUN). A late home run in the seventh inning of game two by
Cacie Cutright was the highlight of the day for the Wolves.
Game 1
West Georgia was unable to hold off Queens bats during the opening game of the series, and while they were able to get five hits, they stranded seven runners throughout the game which contributed to their loss.
The Wolves got off to a rocky start after giving up two, two-run home runs in the first two innings, causing an early 4-0 deficit. Queens was able to gain early momentum and scored one more in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
The Wolves fought back in the final inning of the game, but only scored one run, and fell short of scoring the two runners on base. UWG's only other run came from a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Game 2
The second game of the series began with an early scoring drought for both teams, but was eventually broken by the Wolves. West Georgia was able to get the bats heated up towards the end of the game.
Game two remained scoreless through the first four innings, and the Royals remained scoreless through the first five innings, thanks to solid pitching from sophomore pitcher
Delaney Hoyle. Hoyle got the Wolves out of a big jam in the third inning, had two big back-to-back strikeouts in the fifth inning, and a third strikeout in the sixth inning.
The Wolves were unable to get anything started early and suffered eight strikeouts in the first four innings.
UWG's first hit came from a single by sophomore
Ally Long in the fifth inning. Long reached to second on an error. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly ultimately brought Long home, scoring the first run of the game.
Two more hits, followed by a
Cacie Cutright three-run home run in the seventh inning, brought the score to 4-0.
A last minute rally late in the seventh inning by the Royals brought the score to 4-3, with the winning run at the plate. Senior pitcher
Calli Hardison came out of the bullpen and was able to get the save after pitching the final out for the Wolves. The game two win, split the series 1-1.
