JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The UWG softball team was swept in Saturday's ASUN conference doubleheader, falling in games one and two of the weekend series against the Jacksonville Dolphins.
West Georgia (11-24, 3-5 ASUN) gave up 11 runs in both games, falling in the series opener 11-2, before dropping game two, 11-8. Jacksonville (20-14, 5-3 ASUN) led by as much as seven in game two before UWG mounted a comeback to make it a one-run game in the sixth before the Dolphins pulled away again.
GAME ONE
UWG led 2-0 after an inning and a half of game one, but then JU rattled off 11 unanswered runs to end the game in the sixth inning.
Madison McDonald and Mickey Coslor each picked up RBIs to open the scoring for the Wolves.
Jacksonville got on the board in the second and then added three more in the third, chasing UWG starter Delaney Hoyle as the Wolves turned it over to Dixiana Sims in the circle. Sims was tagged for five earned runs and JU used a five-run sixth to end the game via run rule.
Offensively, UWG had just two hits with Bekah Johnson recording a single and Zekylah Boyd picking up a double.
GAME TWO
Things looked bleak in game two as JU struck for six in the first inning, forcing the Wolves to go to the bullpen before recording an out.
Jacksonville then added one run in the second to go up 7-0 before UWG got on the board in the third as Bekah Johnson singled and then later scored on a double steal attempt that resulted in out, but still produced a run.
JU immediately responded in the bottom half to get the lead back to seven.
After a quiet fourth, the Wolves got another run in the fifth, on a Zekylah Boyd triple, scoring Bekah Johnson.
In the sixth, UWG capitalized on three JU errors, pushing across five runs. Jenna Samuel singled and later scored on an error, and Cacie Cutright also scored on an error on the very next at-bat. After a walk loaded the bases, Olivia Slocumb cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to make it an 8-7 game.
Again, Jacksonville responded, this time scoring three runs on three hits and a walk against reliever Calli Hardison.
Jenna Samuel doubled in the seventh and scored on RBI single from Victoria Hardy to account for the final, three-run margin.
UWG had eight hits in game two, led by two-hit games from Samuel and Johnson. The three extra-base hits came from Samuel, Boyd, and Slocumb.
