Wolves Snap Losing Streak in Wichita State Doubleheader

WICHITA, Kan. - West Georgia baseball snapped its 12-game losing skid with a 5-4 win over Wichita State in game one of today's road doubleheader before falling in game two 12-7.

Powered by a four-run second frame, another solid start by Lex Kenny and a save from Zane Wright UWG (2-13, 0-0 ASUN) kicked off the doubleheader with its first win since the season opener today against WSU (11-4, 0-0 AAC).

In game two, UWG jumped out to a 7-0 lead fueled from a pair of three-run innings and a good start by Luke Ridley, but it was not enough to overcome the Shockers' late rally.

Pitching in his third start this season, Kenny secured his first win at UWG, only conceding two runs while striking out three Shockers today. Coming in during the seventh, Wright struck out three Shockers and only gave up one run in 2.1 frames to recorded his first save at West Georgia.

In 5.2 innings of game two, Ridley struck out two batters and gave up one earned run in his third start of the season.

GAME ONE DETAILS
Today's game one opened with Kenny and the Wolves shutting down the Shockers' first three batters with a pair of outfield popups and a punchout by the senior righty.

Capitalizing on base hits by infielders Patrick McCullough and Gabe Wuerth, as well as an error from the Shocker playing first base, the Wolves kicked off the second frame loading the bags.

Down two outs, left fielder Anthony Cole brought a pair of base runners home with his first double of the season. Catcher Mason Cooper followed it up with a two-run RBI to give the Pack a 4-0 advantage, their largest lead of the series at this point.

Two innings would pass before WSU got anything going on offense. With a Shocker on first, a WSU double to right field was enough to bring the base runner home and cut the Wolves' lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Wichita State added to their tally in the fifth with another RBI double.

Kenny would rotate off the mound in the seventh for redshirt junior Davis Williams with the Wolves leading 4-2. In this inning, KSU cracked the first home run of the day to cut the lead to 4-3.

West Georgia's designated hitter Andon Lewis responded with a base hit RBI to put the Wolves back up by two in the following frame. Still in the eighth with only one out, UWG loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, but the Shockers' relief pitcher Ryan Morrison escaped the jam with a ground out and punchout.

WSU added one more run in the ninth on another RBI double, but would be stopped short of staging the full comeback. UWG held on to win 5-4 with Wright securing the first save of the season.

GAME TWO DETAILS
With the Wolves carrying the momentum of the win into today's game two, UWG jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame thanks to an RBI single from McCullough and a two-run homer from Lewis.

UWG followed this frame by scoring another three runs off a two-run RBI double by Cooper and a throwing error from the Shockers that allowed Lewis to reach home.

Two innings later, Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the Wolves' lead to 7-0.

WSU tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI base hit, but outside of that score, Ridley and the Wolves limited the Shockers from getting on the scoreboard.

With Ridley rotated off the mound in the seventh, Wichita State came alive. In this inning, the hosts drove in three runners on RBI singles and cracked a three-run homer to knot the game at 7-7.

WSU added five more runs in the eighth to secure a 12-7 win fueled by 17 hits.

Rowan Park was tagged with the loss, bringing his season record to 0-1. In his one frame, he gave up two runs and had one strikeout.

Tomorrow's game four is now scheduled for a 12:35 p.m. first pitch. Steaming and stat links are tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.
