UWG Wins Series Finale to Split Weekend with Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. - West Georgia baseball held on to win 13-11 over Wichita State through eight innings today in the road series finale. The game ended early due to travel restrictions.

Even with the Shockers (11-5, 0-0 AAC) scoring nine unanswered runs, West Georgia's (3-13, 0-0 ASUN) 13-2 lead that was built by a pair of six-run frames still proved to be too much for WSU to overcome. UWG splits the series 2-2 vs Wichita State.

"I'm proud of our guys", said head coach Jeff Smith. "Our guys competed. We were up, and they cut the lead, but our guys held tough. And we were able to come away with the win and split the series."

Third baseman Patrick McCullough led the Wolves with five RBIs, three hits, two of which were doubles, while also adding two runs.

"He (McCullough) is getting back into the groove. He's swinging it well. He's putting together some good at-bats," stated Smith. "I thought our whole team did well. We just have to continue to find a way to start making adjustments when other teams make adjustments on us, and get it done."

For the third time in the road series, UWG opened with a run in the first frame. Today's score came on a solo homer from catcher David Bell, his second on the season.

The Shockers responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBIs to take a 2-1 lead over the Pack.

Two innings later, the Wolves loaded the bases with a single and back-to-back walks, ending the WSU starting pitcher's day on the mound. With two outs tagged against the Wolves, McCullough crushed a three-run double to put the Pack back up 4-2. Still in the third frame, designated hitter Andon Lewis and center fielder Blake Bradford hit consecutive home runs to extend West Georgia's advantage to 7-2.

Capitalizing on a wild WSU pitch, a walk and a UWG single, the Wolves again loaded the bases with only one out in the fourth. Bell immediately took advantage of the scoring situation by smacking a two-run RBI single. McCullough added to the scoring flurry with his second consecutive RBI double of the day to put UWG up 10-2. He would later reach home on a WSU throwing error by third. Still in the fourth, a costly mistake by the Shockers pitcher brought Lewis home on a wild pitch. UWG ended the frame up 13-2.

Outside of Wichita State's two hits in the first, UWG kept the Shockers off the bags until the bottom of the fourth. Through the fourth and fifth, the Shockers tallied three homers and scored two additional runs to cut the lead to 13-7.

Following a scoreless sixth, Wichita State added three runs in the seventh from a home run and an RBI from a fielder's choice.

WSU hit one more homer in the eighth, but UWG secured a third out on a diving play by shortstop Jacob Bowman to stop the Shocker comeback.

UWG won 13-11 to tie the weekend road series 2-2.

Redshirt junior righty Davis Williams earned his first win as a Wolf. In his lone inning, he did not give up a run.

Talking about the series split, Smith said "I'm proud of our guys on the way they battled. I thought Lex Kenny and Luke Ridley gave us two quality starts. And I don't think they had their best stuff, but they were able to get deep into the game, which allowed us to use guys in situations where we're going to have to have that during the game. Zane Wright was another plus this weekend. He had a good performance. Our guys competed."

The Wolves head to Atlanta on Tuesday to face off against No. 5 Georgia Tech. First pitch from Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
