CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team fell in both games of a Saturday doubleheader at home, dropping the weekend's three-game series to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs.
West Georgia was run-ruled, 11-0, in the first game of the twin bill and then fell 8-2 in the finale.
GAME ONE
Gardner-Webb (17-8) had the bats going in game one of the doubleheader as they scored 11 runs on 11 hits. The Wolves (8-16) were held scoreless as they dropped game one, 11-0.
Following a walk, hit-by-pitch, and another walk, Gardner-Webb capitalized on the opportunity and scored two runs. A fielder's choice groundout by Taylor Dreher brought home the first run of the game, and the Bulldogs added another shortly after on a defensive error allowing an additional run to score.
Back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning put runners in scoring position for Gardner-Webb. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, a groundout to shortstop brought home a run to extend the Bulldogs lead to three.
Three straight singles brought home another run for Gardner-Webb, putting pressure on the Wolves defense. With the bases loaded and their backs against the wall,
Jenna Samuel helped herself by starting a 1–2–3 double play to end the inning, only allowing one run. West Georgia threatened in the bottom half of the fourth as
Zekylah Boyd led off the inning with a single and then stole second to move into scoring position, but the Wolves couldn't bring her in.
Two singles to start the inning put Gardner-Webb in a strong position and forced
Jenna Samuel out of the game.
Kaprice Leonard came in to pitch and immediately induced a flyout for the first out. The Bulldogs added another run on a sacrifice fly.
Zekylah Boyd then made a spectacular catch in the outfield for the second out, but Gardner-Webb kept the pressure on, scoring six more runs in the inning. The rally eventually forced Leonard out of the game, bringing in
Dixiana Sims, who recorded the final out to end the frame.
GAME TWO
The Wolves (8-17) lose a tough one in the series finale to the runnin' Bulldogs. Gardner Webb (18-8) took control of the game late, scoring seven of their eight runs in the last three innings winning 8-2.
After giving up a leadoff walk, pitcher
Cacie Cutright responded by retiring the next three batters, including a strikeout. In the bottom half of the inning,
Megan Waites reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Victoria Hardy. Sophomore
Jenna Samuel then drove in the game's first run with an RBI single, giving the Wolves a 1–0 lead.Â
Gardner-Webb responded in the second by loading the bases with zero outs, before the Wolves defense dug in and got three straight outs to keep the Bulldogs off the board.

After loading the bases with no outs, the Bulldogs plated four runs in the sixth inning including a three-run home run by Reese Collier, forcing Cutright out of the game. The Wolves responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by
