Late UNF Push Overpowers UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Friday night's game one conference clash ended in West Georgia baseball falling 7-3 to the North Florida Ospreys at Cole Field.

Scoreless through the first five frames, the Wolves (10-23, 7-6 ASUN) managed to generate just enough offense to take a one-run lead, but it wasn't enough to withstand the top-ranked Ospreys' (19-14, 11-2 ASUN) powerful late push.

"I'm disappointed. We're a better offensive team than what we showed today," said head coach Jeff Smith. "We struck out 14 times, we left too many guys on base. We just have to be better than that. We're the top two teams in our division right now, and we have to play like it. We gotta compete like it, and I think these guys will show up tomorrow. One game doesn't dictate the series, and that's what we're going for."

Uncharacteristically of the majority of UWG baseball games this season, tonight's matchup saw both teams struggling to get anything going early on.

It took until the top of the fourth frame for the tie to break. At the halfway point, UNF crushed a pair of solo home runs in back-to-back at-bats to grab a 2-0 lead over the Pack.

North Florida continued to keep UWG out of scoring position until designated hitter Andon Lewis opened the sixth with a leadoff double. Third baseman Patrick McCullough pushed his fellow Wolf to third with a single to right field. With McCullough stealing second, pinch-hitter Blake Bradford took advantage of the UWG scoring position by driving the two Wolves home with a single to right field. Still in the sixth, catcher Mason Cooper gave the Pack its first lead of the day with an RBI double down the left field line.

It didn't take long for the visitors to recover. During the seventh, UNF locked that game at 3-3 thanks to a sacrifice fly to center.

In the eighth, the Ospreys added another run with an RBI double, giving the visitors a late 4-3 advantage.

UNF capped off their scoring run with three more in the ninth, creating a 7-3 cushion.

UWG would fall 7-3.

Allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh, Grant Edwards was tagged with the loss, bringing his season record to 1-2. In his lone frame, he struck out one batter and allowed one earned run.

The Wolves and Ospreys return to Cole Field tomorrow for game two. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The game will not have a live stream, but a live stats link is tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
