Wolves Fall to Ospreys in Game Two

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball was defeated 5-3 by the North Florida Ospreys in Saturday's home ASUN action.

With the Wolves (10-24, 7-7 ASUN) jumping out to an early lead while preventing the Ospreys (20-14, 12-5 ASUN) from scoring through six frames, it looked like the Pack was going to take game two until an explosive seventh inning pushed the visitors ahead to secure the series win. The series finale is set to take place tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Cole Field.

"We were in a pitchers' duel for quite a while, but then in the seventh inning they scored four, and we just couldn't get anything going offensively to get back into it," stated head coach Jeff Smith. "We can compete with anybody in this league. I've told the team that. I felt like today we were playing more not to lose than to win. We have to go out there with the mindset that we're winners. We gotta go take it, seize the opportunity."

Today's ASUN action opened with the Ospreys looking like they were going to strike first, but a mistag at home plate allowed the Wolves to escape the frame still locked at 0-0.

Sparked by a sacrifice fly from right fielder Gabe Young and a daring steal home by left fielder David Bell, UWG jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Ospreys in the second inning.

Backed by stellar pitching and clean fielding, both teams struggled to get anything going on offense.

Following four scoreless frames, UNF snuck an RBI single through the left side to cut the Wolves' lead to 2-1 in the seventh. The visitors followed the score with an RBI double down the left field line to lock the game at 2-2. North Florida finished the frame up 4-2 after recording another RBI double.

The eighth would see UNF extend its lead to 5-2 with a solo home run.

Pinch hitter Fano Cruz responded in the ninth with a home run over the center field fence, but the Wolves could not get enough going to overcome the deficit. UWG fell 5-3.

Pitching in a career-high 6.2 frames, starting pitcher Lex Kenny struck out four batters and allowed four earned runs. He was tagged with the loss, bringing his season record to 4-3.

The Wolves return to Cole Field tomorrow to play in a 12 p.m. series finale against the Ospreys. Streaming and live stat links are tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.
