West Georgia Grabs 7-2 Win Over UNF

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball capped off its home ASUN series beating the North Florida Ospreys 7-2 on Sunday at Cole Field.

Falling into an early deficit to open today's game, UWG (11-24, 8-7 ASUN) leaned on Luke Ridley's solid start and superior offensive production to overcome the Ospreys (20-15, 12-3 ASUN) in the series finale. UNF finished the weekend claiming a 2-1 series win.

"Luke Ridley went out there and gave us a quality start. He threw well. He gave up a couple of runs, but we were able to tack some runs on. I thought we had better plate discipline today offensively. It was a good game," said head coach Jeff Smith. See what else Smith stated in the post-game press conference by clicking the video tagged at the bottom of the page.

Pitching in a career-high seven frames, Ridley struck out a personal best eight batters and allowed two earned runs. He earned today's win, bringing his season record to 3-1.

The series finale opened with the Ospreys' leadoff batter cracking a home run over the center field fence to give the visitors an early advantage.

Thanks to a bad throw from the UNF second baseman, the Wolves tied the game at one apiece after center fielder Blake Bradford was able to reach home during the second inning.

The third frame would see North Florida smack its second solo shot of the day to reestablish a one-run lead.

With the Wolves quickly loading the bases in the fourth, UNF rotated through a pair of relief pitchers before shortstop Blane Schmitt drove two Wolves home with an RBI single, giving UWG a 3-2 advantage.

Continuing to stay hot in the batter's box, the Wolves extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth frame thanks to an RBI single from designated hitter Andon Lewis and a sacrifice bunt from Bradford.

UWG would again load the bases with zero outs to open the seventh. Luckily for the Ospreys, the Wolves capitalized on scoring position with just two runs thanks to a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly from catcher Mason Cooper.

In the eighth, it looked like UNF was going to smack a two-run homer until Bradford climbed the center field fence and snatched the ball out of the air to keep the Pack up by five.

UWG held on to win 7-2.

The Wolves get back on the road to take on the Georgia State Panthers this Tuesday in Atlanta. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
