UWG Falls in Midweek Non-conference Contest

CARROLLTON, Ga - The West Georgia baseball team lost its midweek matchup, 5-2, Tuesday night in Atlanta, GA.

The Wolves (11-26, 8-7 ASUN) jumped out to an early two run lead in the first inning, but a four run fourth inning would prove to be enough for Georgia State (19-19, 7-8 SBC) to win and sweep the season series over West Georgia.

The Wolves struck first in the opening frame, with Andon Lewis and Blake Bradford each belting solo home runs over the left field wall to put West Georgia up early.

Wolves' starter Gunnar Plante was sharp early, retiring the first nine Georgia State batters in order.

After being silenced early, the Panthers broke through in a big way, tallying two runs on three consecutive hits in the fourth inning before an out was recorded to tie it up and force the West Georgia starter out of the game. West Georgia battled through the inning defensively, as Fano Cruz cut down a runner at the plate, helping the Wolves escape the jam while allowing only two additional runs.

West Georgia recorded leadoff runners in three consecutive innings, but double plays and failed steal attempts prevented the Wolves from capitalizing. The fifth inning featured double plays from both defenses, while the sixth and seventh innings saw threats erased by a caught stealing and another double play.

Georgia State tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to three runs.

Plante was tagged with the loss, as the team fell 5-2.

The Wolves are back in action this weekend as they take on ASUN opponent Jacksonville in a three-game series, marking their second meeting of the season. West Georgia claimed the first matchup earlier this year, winning the series 2-1. Game one is set for Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at John Sessions Stadium.
