Wolves Drop Game One to JU Dolphins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - West Georgia baseball fell 13-7 to Jacksonville University on Friday night at John Session Field.

The Wolves' (11-27, 8-8 ASUN) 6-0 lead proved to be not enough to outlast an explosive JU (19-18, 7-9 ASUN) sixth and seventh inning comeback in the road ASUN series opener. Saturday's game two is set to start at 7 p.m., and it is streaming on ESPN+.

UWG hit the ground running to open the ASUN road series. In the top of the first, designated hitter Andon Lewis took advantage of the Wolves' scoring position by knocking an RBI single to center field to put the Pack up 1-0.

Outfielder Landon Weidner followed it up with a sacrifice fly to right, pushing the Wolves' lead to 2-0.

Still in the first, outfielder Anthony Cole cleared the bases and extended the UWG advantage to 5-0 with a huge home run over the left field wall.

Continuing to stay hot in the batter's box, West Georgia added to the tally in the second inning thanks to an RBI double from third baseman Patrick McCullough.

It would take until the third frame for the Dolphins to strike. Opening the inning with back-to-back punchouts, JU stayed alive with a walk. Cashing in the base runner, Jacksonville drilled an RBI double to left field in the very next at-bat to cut the UWG lead to 6-1.

Held scoreless since the second frame, West Georgia's offense got going in the sixth thanks to a handful of costly JU pitching mistakes. Capitalizing on a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a base hit, UWG loaded the bags with one out tagged against them. Another bad pitch that got lost in the dirt allowed a Wolf to score, pushing the lead back to six runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jacksonville stormed back with four runs following a pair of RBI singles and a UWG throwing error. Holding a 7-5 lead, the action could have been a one-score game if it hadn't been for a throw down at home from Weidner to prevent a fifth Dolphin from scoring.

The seventh would see JU take their first lead of the day, following four RBI singles that drove in six runs. Jacksonville ended the frame up 11-7.

JU added two more runs on an RBI triple and single in the eighth before winning 13-7.

UWG and JU return to John Session Field tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game two. Streaming and live stat links are tagged on the West Georgia baseball schedule.
