JACKSONVILLE, Fla - The UWG baseball team dropped game two of the series to Jacksonville on Saturday night, 13-7.
West Georgia (11-28, ASUN 8-9) jumped out early on offense, but despite holding a 14-13 edge in hits over Jacksonville (20-18, ASUN 8-9), the Dolphins came through with timely hitting to win the game and secure the series.
The Wolves' offense came out firing on all cylinders in the first frame, jumping all over the Dolphins. Anthony Cole, Patrick McCullough, and Landon Weidner opened the inning with three singles, setting the table for David Bell's two-run double. Mason Cooper followed with a two-run single, and Blane Schmitt added another hit as West Georgia plated four runs on six hits to grab an early 4-0 advantage.
The Dolphins responded with a pair of runs, stringing together three consecutive singles with one out and an RBI fielder's choice, cutting the early deficit to two.Â
Following a loud start to the game, the second inning was fairly quiet for West Georgia, though Andon Lewis ripped a double to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
West Georgia added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI double from McCullough, scoring Fano Cruz and forcing Jacksonville to turn to its bullpen early. Jacksonville answered in the bottom half, capitalizing on a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and two hits to tie the game at 5-5.
UWG starter Lex Kenny made quick work of the fifth inning, striking out two of the three batters in the frame and only throwing eleven pitches. Riding that momentum, McCullough followed up a base knock from Lewis, with an RBI double to put the Wolves back on top, 6-5.
Despite an incredible throw from right fielder Gabe Young to cut down a runner at third base, the Dolphins were able to put together three hits and plate three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead, making it 8-6.
West Georgia refused to go quietly in the eighth, loading the bases on a single and two walks. McCullough then added an RBI with a bases-loaded walk to trim the Jacksonville lead to one.
Jacksonville recorded three hits, including a two-run bomb by Abdriel Delgado and scored five insurance runs in the bottom of the frame, despite giving the Wolves an out due to a runner's interference. Making the score 13-7.
Pitching six and a third innings and giving up eight runs, Kenny was charged with the loss in tonight's game.Â
UWG lost 13-7.
The Wolves will battle the Dolphins in the series finale tomorrow at 12 p.m., looking to make it out of John Session Field with a win. The game will be live streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be accessible through the UWG baseball schedule.
