Jacksonville Secures Series Sweep Against UWG

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - West Georgia baseball fell 9-8 to the Jacksonville University Dolphins on Sunday at John Sessions Field, resulting in the Pack's first ASUN sweep of the season. JU leads the season head-to-head 4-2.

Building an early lead for the third consecutive game, the Wolves (11-29, 8-10 ASUN) once again could not hold off a JU (21-18, 9-9 ASUN) rally, but were able to battle back late to force extras. Unfortunately, in the tenth, JU claimed the series sweep with an RBI double.

"I think our hitters competed really well today. I thought Luke Ridley gave us a chance, and we just weren't able to hang on and get the victory," said head coach Jeff Smith. "You know, we had some big hits, big plays. Andon Lewis stepped up here and tied it in the eighth with a homer, but we just couldn't pull it off. We've got to be better when we come out of the pen. Guys have got to be able to not walk, guys. We have to be able to locate and command the baseball. We missed location too many times this weekend, especially late, and we've got to be able to do better than that if we're going to compete with the teams that we're competing against."

For the third straight time in the series, UWG opened the game striking first. In the top of the opening inning, outfielder Landon Weidner put the Wolves up 2-0 with a homer over the left center wall.

UWG extended their lead to 4-0 in the second frame thanks to a throwing error by JU and an RBI groundout from outfielder Anthony Cole.

Still in the second frame, the Dolphins cut the Wolves' advantage to 4-1 with an RBI double.

Continuing to stay hot in the batter's box, West Georgia added another run in the third inning courtesy of a base hit RBI by shortstop Blane Schmitt.

With the Dolphins loading the bases in the bottom of the frame, West Georgia's lead was cut to 5-2 when a walk allowed a JU base runner to cross the plate.

For the second time this series, Cole crushed another UWG home run over the left center wall to push the Wolves ahead 7-2.

Loading the bases again in the fifth, JU capitalized three runs following a pair of walks and an RBI single.

Rounding out the rally, Jacksonville locked the game at 7-7 in the sixth thanks to an RBI double into right field. Before the frame was over, JU took an 8-7 lead with an RBI single.

Despite falling behind, the Wolves weren't out of the fight. In the top of the eighth, designated hitter Andon Lewis crushed a solo home run to lock the game back up at 8-8.

Two frames would pass before JU cracked a walk-off RBI double in the tenth, claiming a 9-8 win.

Zane Wright was tagged with the loss after giving up one run in the tenth.

The Wolves return to Cole Field for a four-game home swing, starting with a Tuesday night rematch against Kennesaw State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
