Softball Sweeps FGCU to Secure Series Victory

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team snapped their 10-game skid in a big way on Saturday at University Field, sweeping the FGCU Eagles in an aSUN conference doubleheader.

West Georgia (13-30, 5-9 ASUN) won game one 8-5 behind the bat of Jenna Samuel before the Wolves walked off FGCU (14-25, 8-6 ASUN) in game two.

It was Samuel who provided the walk-off single in game two, finishing the doubleheader 5-for-8 with five RBIs and a home run.

GAME ONE
Samuel's 3-for-4 game with four RBIs led the way for the Wolves in a series-opening victory.

It didn't start well for the Wolves however as the Eagles scored one run in the first and three in the second to lead 4-0. But in the bottom half of the second, UWG struck for five runs. The first run scored after back-to-back walks, a double steal, and an RBI single from Zekylah Boyd. An error drove in the next, and then three runs scored on one swing of the bat from Jenna Samuel to put the Wolves up 5-4.

UWG would never trail again as starter Cacie Cutright settled in and up zeroes in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, Samuel picked up her fourth RBI with a third inning single.

The Wolves added two runs in the fifth as Cutright gave herself a little cushion with a two-RBI single to push the lead to 8-4.

FGCU loaded the bases in the seventh and got one run, but Cutright slammed the door shut and earned the complete game victory.

GAME TWO
In game two, Sky Ramos provided all of the run production for either team through the first five innings as she had solo home runs in the first and third innings to put UWG up, 2-0.

Calli Hardison was dealing, scattering five hits over five innings until FGCU got a pair of solo home runs of their own in the sixth. The first came from the bat of their clean-up hitter, Presley Smith, and two batters later, Sophie Wylie tied it up at 2-2 with a shot to left.

With the game tied in the seventh, Megan Waites singled to lead off the frame and then after she was out on a ground ball, Dixiana Sims then moved into scoring position on a Kaprice Leonard pinch hit single. Samuel picked up her fourth hit of the doubleheader and drove in the game-winning run.

Hardison picked up the complete game victory, allowing just the two runs on the solo homers. In total, Hardison allowed eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Game one marked the 16th multi-hit game of the season for Samuel and the second three-hit game. It marked the seventh game this season she has driven in multiple RBIs. The home run was her team-high eighth of the season and the ninth of her career.
- It was Cutright's third complete game of her career.
- Freshman Ella Oswalt also recorded a multi-hit game in the opener, giving her seven.
- Ramos' two home runs gives her three on the season and four for her career. It was the first multi-HR game by an individual in the Division I era, and the first time a player has done so since Blaire Bizette on April 27, 2024 against Valdosta State.
- The one-run win in game two was the Wolves 10th one-run decision of the year. UWG is 6-4 in one-run games in 2025.
