Comeback Falls Short as FGCU Takes Series Finale over Wolves

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Playing the series already in hand, the UWG softball team fell in the Sunday finale to the FGCU Eagles by a 13-11 tally.

West Georgia (13-31, 5-10 ASUN) and FGCU (15-25, 9-6 ASUN) combined for 24 runs, 22 hits, and six errors in Sunday's finale with 19 of the 24 runs being scored in the back half of the contest.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the West Georgia struck first on an Ella Oswalt double, a walk, and a two-RBI triple by Madison McDonald.

Two walks came back to bite the Wolves in the third as two free passes scored on a three-run home run by K'Mari Williams, giving FGCU the 3-2 lead.

The Wolves tied things up, 3-3, after a leadoff walk and some small ball that put pressure on the FGCU defense. Jenna Samuel went first to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored after the throw across the diamond sailed high.

UWG added two runs in the fourth thanks to a myriad of FGCU mistakes. It started with a walk and was followed by a passed ball and two wild pitches to score the first run to give the Wolves the lead. Zekylah Boyd then swiped home on a throw down to second to make it a 5-3 lead for UWG.

The Eagles flipped the game in the fifth, scoring seven runs on six hits and two errors to take a 10-5 lead.

In the bottom half, FGCU made their second error which resulted in a run for the Wolves.

After a three spot for the Eagles in the sixth, Ella Oswalt slugged her seventh home run of the season, and her first career grand slam to cut the deficit to 13-10. The very next batter was Cacie Cutright and she followed suit with her fifth homer of the season to make it 13-11, Eagles which is how it would end.

Oswalt led the way with three hits for the Wolves while driving in four from the grand slam.

West Georgia will travel to Alabama State for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 14.
