MONTGOMERY, Al. - West Georgia Softball traveled over the state border to Alabama State University tonight for a midweek match up. The bats were hot for both teams in this offensive battle, which included 16 total hits and two home runs for each team. West Georgia was unable to find an answer for the Hornets at the end of the game, giving up seven unanswered runs, and UWG ultimately fell 10-4.
The Wolves (13-32, 5-10 ASUN) came in to this match up off of a series win over conference foe, FGCU, while the Hornets (17-27, 10-7 SWAC) came off of a conference series win over FAMU on the road. Both teams were looking to continue their success, but the ASU bats were too much for the Wolves bullpen to handle tonight.
After a scoreless first inning, Alabama State struck first in the bottom of the second. The Hornets were able to capitalize on a Wolves error with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
The second score of the game came in the third inning, again from ASU, with another sacrifice fly to right field, putting the Hornets up 2-0. The Wolves pitching allowed three walks and another run before they made a call to the bullpen.
Cacie Cutright made a scene at the first at-bat of the fourth inning with a solo home run, earning the first run of the game for the Wolves, making the score 3-1.
Calli Hardison delivered a seamless 3-up 3-down fourth inning for the Wolves, followed by
Jenna Samuel delivering another Wolves' bomb to center field, her ninth of the season.
Shortly after the homer, with multiple base runners on,
Madison McDonald joined in on the scoring with a go-ahead, 2-RBI double of her own. At this point, the Wolves led 4-3.
The bottom of the fifth inning brought two more home runs from the Hornets, scoring 3 more total runs for ASU, making the score 6-4.
ASU tacked on another three runs in the bottom of the sixth, before the Wolves made another call to the bullpen.
A scoreless sixth and seventh inning for West Georgia kept the Wolves from being able to rally back, and UWG ultimately fell 10-4 to the Hornets.
The Wolves will be back on the road this weekend as they travel to DeLand, Fl. To take on the Stetson Hatters in a three-game ASUN conference series. The first pitch of the Saturday doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
