Wolves Fly by FGCU to Claim Series Opener

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball opened its home ASUN series beating Florida Gulf Coast 9-4 at Cole Field on Thursday night.

Capitalizing on a season-high five errors by FGCU (19-10, 5-4 ASUN) and a five-run second inning by UWG (9-21, 6-4 ASUN), the Wolves created enough early offense to hold on and beat the Eagles in game one of the home conference series.

"Maverick Torres came out and gave us a solid start. We were able to swing the bats early. Their pitcher settled down a little bit, but FGCU helped us out, and we were able to capitalize on some of the mistakes that they made. I'm proud of our guys," said head coach Jeff Smith to open tonight's post game press conference (see below).

Pitching in a career-high 6.1 innings, Torres struck out a personal best six batters and allowed four earned runs on his way to earning the victory. He now posts a 2-4 record.

Designated hitter Andon Lewis opened the series crushing his seventh home run of the season, putting UWG up 1-0 in the first frame. Notably, Lewis hit a homer in his previous at-bat last weekend against Queens.

The visitors would equalize the game, 1-1, in the following frame with a double up the middle that allowed an Eagle to score.

West Georgia wasted no time seizing control in the second inning. Outfielder Anthony Cole jumpstarted the scoring surge, slipping a single into left field that brought two Wolves across the plate. Cole later came around to score himself after a miscue by the FGCU pitcher, keeping the momentum rolling. Outfielder David Bell continued the offensive push with a groundout to short that plated another run. By the time the dust settled, the Wolves had built a commanding 6-1 lead after Lewis capped off the frame reaching on yet another Eagles' error.

Coming off scoreless third and fourth frames, FGCU belted a three-run homer over left field fence to cut the UWG advantage to 6-4. Notably, all of the Eagles' runs tonight happened with two outs tagged against them.

Following a four-inning scoring drought, UWG woke back up in the seventh. With two Wolves on, Blane Schmitt put West Georgia up 7-4 with an RBI single through the middle. The Wolves ended the inning holding an 8-4 advantage after UWG tallied a run on FGCU's fifth error of the night.

Lewis added one more RBI in the eighth before the Wolves went on to win 9-4.

The teams return to Cole Field tomorrow for game two. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Game two will not have a live stream, but game three's stream link is available on the UWG baseball schedule.
