JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The UWG softball team started their three-game ASUn series at North Florida on the right foot on Friday, earning a 6-4 road victory over the Ospreys.
West Georgia (14-36, 6-13 ASUN) recorded 12 hits in the game while North Florida (33-18, 8-11 ASUN) had 11 hits, and never led in the game.
UWG took the early lead as Dixiana Sims tripled with the bases loaded in the first inning, giving the Wolves a 3-0 cushion before the defense and Cacie Cutright even took the field.
The Ospreys got two back in the second and one in the third to tie things up at 3-3 into the fourth inning. Zekylah Boyd singled home a run in the fourth, cashing in a leadoff double by Mickey Coslor to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead, but UNF got it right back in their half to tie things up once again.
The Wolves took the lead again in the fifth as two runs scored on an infield single by Megan Waites, and just like before the Ospreys threatened in the bottom half. This time, however, Calli Hardison got out of the jam with a ground ball double play to preserve the lead.
UNF made some noise in the seventh, but the final out was made on a pickoff throw to third, giving the Wolves the win in game one of the series.
Hardison picked up the save, tossing three shutout innings in relief. Cutright struck out four batters in her four innings of work and earned the victory.
Ella Oswalt, Olivia Slocumb, Coslor, and Sims each had two hits with Sims picking up the three RBIs. Waites also had two RBIs in the game, while Slocumb also recorded one.
The two teams come back tomorrow for an 11 a.m. doubleheader in a very pivotal matchup. The Wolves need to win one of the two games to keep their postseason hopes alive going into the final weekend of the regular season.
