UWG Baseball Falls in Series Finale

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball dropped the series finale, 13-11, to Stetson University in extra innings on Sunday at Cole Field.

The Wolves' (11-33, 8-13 ASUN) early 5-0 lead that was built by a David Bell grand slam proved to be not enough to outlast the red-hot Hatters (18-25, 9-11 ASUN), with SU scoring eight unanswered runs to ultimately set up the series sweep win in extra innings.

Following the first scoreless opening inning of the series, the UWG offense got going in the second frame with three consecutive base hits to load the bags with no outs. It looked like SU was going to escape the jam after recording back-to-back strikeouts, but first baseman David Bell cleared the bags with a grand slam over the left-center fence. The Wolves would finish the second inning up five runs after third baseman Patrick McCullough added to the scoring attack with an RBI double.

Two more innings would pass before Stetson striked. In the top of the fifth, SU slashed the UWG lead to 5-2 with a pair of RBI singles that snuck through the left side.

Stetson plated six more runs in the following frame to take their first lead of the day, up 8-5. Thankfully for the Pack, it didn't take long for UWG to recover. Capitalizing on a pair of groundout RBIs and Bell's second homer of the game, West Georgia knotted it at 8-8 in the sixth.

The next inning saw SU push back out to a 9-8 lead thanks to a wild pitch that allowed a base runner to take home from third. Continuing to trade scores back-and-forth, UWG took an 11-9 lead in the bottom of the seventh after tallying three runs from a Mason Cooper RBI double.

SU responded in the eighth with two runs on a RBI single up the middle, locking the game at 11-11.

The score stayed locked at 11-11 until SU drove a pair of runners home in the tenth to push to a 13-11 advantage.

Wolves fell 13-11.

Zane Wright was tagged with the loss. In 2.2 frames, Wright struck out two batters and conceded two earned runs.

The Wolves head to Rocky Top to take on the Tennessee Volunteers this Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
