KNOXVILLE, Tn - The West Georgia baseball team fell to SEC opponent Tennessee, 13-0, Tuesday night in Knoxville in their final midweek of the season.
The Volunteers (30-15, 10-11 SEC) continued to stay hot on the offensive side scoring nine runs in the first two innings, hitting five home runs and holding the Wolves (11-34, 8-13 ASUN) scoreless en route to a 13-0 win.
The Wolves' bats were quiet in the opening frame, though Patrick McCullough jumped on the first pitch he saw and shot a single into center field. After two quick outs, Tennessee strung together a pair of singles before launching back-to-back home runs, one to right field and another to left, taking a 4-0 lead.
UT kept the bats rolling in the second, blasting two more home runs, fueling five more runs for the home team.
The Volunteers put pressure on again in the third, placing runners on first and second with one out, but West Georgia reliever Rowan Park escaped the inning unscathed, stranding both runners and keeping the deficit at four.
The Wolves outfielder Anothony Cole ripped a one out double to center field, giving UWG their first runner in scoring position in the game in the top half of the fourth. Pinch hitter Hank Smith followed with a deep fly ball to right field that looked gone off the bat, but fell just short. The Volunteers then added another run in the bottom half with another home run, this one a solo shot over the left field fence, making the score 10-0.
Cashing in on a leadoff single, Tennessee added another run in the fifth.
Wolves' first baseman Fano Cruz led the sixth inning off with a ground-rule double to right field, but the offense was unable to score him, leaving him stranded on second. In the bottom half, UT plated two runs, capitalizing on a leadoff walk and a couple of wild pitches, pushing their advantage to 13 runs.
UWG lost 13-0 in seven innings.
