Wolves Open Series with 14-9 Win

CARROLLTON, Ga.- West Georgia baseball snapped its nine-game losing streak with a 14-9 win over Queens at Cole Field in Friday night's series opener.

Fueled by 14 hits, three homers and solid pitching, UWG (12-34, 9-13 ASUN) created a double-digit lead over Queens (12-32, 8-14 ASUN) that proved to be enough to outlast the visitors' rally. Wolves lead the series 1-0 with two more games left to play.

"It (the win) feels good because we dropped nine in a row, which offensively we've played well in those nine games, but we just haven't finished games out on the mound," said head coach Jeff Smith. "I thought we lost our focus when we had a ten run lead. We gave them back some momentum and gave them some confidence for tomorrow. And that's something that, as a team, we've got to overcome." See the full post-game press conference below.

Today's ASUN action kicked off with the visitors cranking a home run over the right field wall to establish a 1-0 lead in the first.

After being held scoreless on Tuesday for just the second time this season, West Georgia's offense was able to get going early in today's series opener. In the very first UWG at-bat, leadoff hitter Gabe Wuerth answered the Royals' homer with a solo shot over the right field fence to lock the game at 1-1.

Opening the third frame with a walk and a double from David Bell, UWG put themselves in scoring position with zero outs. In the very next at-bat, Patrick McCullough capitalized on the scoring threat with a single up the middle to drive his fellow Wolves home and give UWG a 3-1 lead. Still in the third, Anthony Cole added to the tally by drilling a two-run homer over the left field wall, extending the Pack's advantage to 5-1.

Coming off a scoreless fourth frame, the Wolves' offense exploded with six runs in the fifth. Kicking off the scoring flurry was Cole with an RBI double to left. Landon Weidner followed it up by driving a runner home with an RBI single. Jacob Bowman added to the tally with a sacrifice fly before Wuerth finished off the attack with a three-run homer to push the Wolves' lead to 11-1.

The Pack's rout of the Royals continued in the sixth with Fano Cruz driving a pair of runners home on an RBI double to center. West Georgia ended the frame up 13-1 thanks to a groundout RBI from Weidner.

With the Royals loading the bases immediately in the seventh, Queens put themselves in prime position to start chipping away at the deficit. Before the frame was over, QU capitalized six runs to cut the Wolves' advantage to 13-7.

Moving to the bottom of the frame, Cole tallied his fourth and final RBI of the night with a single to left, extending the lead to 14-7.

QU would plate two more runs in the eighth before falling short, 14-9, in the series opener.

Rowan Park was tagged with the win after keeping the Royals off the scoreboard in his 1.1 frames.

UWG and QU return to Cole Field tomorrow for game two. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. with Senior Day celebrations scheduled to take place roughly at 2:40 p.m. Live coverage links are tagged on the baseball schedule.
