CARROLLTON Ga - The West Georgia baseball was limited to just two runs, dropping game two of the series Saturday afternoon to Queens, 7-2
Queens (13-32, 9-14 ASUN) evened the series with a 7-2 win over West Georgia (12-34, 9-14 ASUN) on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves created several scoring chances throughout the game, but were unable to come through with timely hits, leaving multiple runners in scoring position. Queens' pitching staff was the difference, consistently working out of trouble and keeping UWG to only six hits throughout the game.
Queens opened the first inning with a walk and a stolen base to put an early runner in scoring position, but the Wolves were able to get out of the frame unscathed. The Wolves threatened in the bottom half as senior Gabe Wuerth reached on an error and senior Patrick McCullough ripped a double down the right field line putting two runners in scoring position early, but were unable to score.
Back-to-back doubles to begin the second gave Queens the game's first run before West Georgia turned a 4-6-3 double play to slow the momentum and hold the Royals to only two runs.
The Royals looked to break the game wide open in the third, loading the bases via two walks and a hit-by-pitch, but usual West Georgia starter Lex Kenny entered in relief and worked the Wolves out of a bases-loaded jam, holding Queens to only one run in the inning.Â
The Wolves created another opportunity in the third behind McCullough's second double of the game, though UWG was unable to cash in despite putting runners in scoring position once again.
Queens broke the game open in the fifth, stringing together four hits and three runs. The inning was sparked by a pair of perfectly placed bunt singles as the Royals stretched their advantage to 6-0.
After repeatedly leaving runners in scoring position, the Wolves finally broke through in the sixth. Senior Landon Weidner drove in the Wolves first run with an RBI groundout before Blane Schmitt followed with an RBI single, trimming the deficit to 6-2 after six innings.
A two-out rally in the seventh gave UWG another scoring opportunity, sparked by McCullough's fourth hit of the afternoon and single up the middle by designated hitter Anthony Cole, but once again the Royals pitchers were able to get out of the jam.Â
Following four scoreless innings, Queens added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly to right field.
