Non-Conference Midweek Ends in West Georgia Loss

MACON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball fell 12-1 to the Mercer Bears in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon.

Backing their reputation of being one of the top offensive teams in the country, Mercer (25-8, 4-2 SoCON) knocked three out of the park and capitalized on two RBI doubles to secure the season sweep over the Wolves (10-23, 7-5 ASUN) tonight at OrthoGeorgia Park.

For the second time this year, third baseman Patrick McCullough opened the game with a home run in his first at-bat. This 1-0 lead was the last time UWG scored tonight.

It didn't take long for Mercer to recover. The bottom of the first would see a pair of two-run RBI doubles give the hosts a 4-1 advantage.

In the following frame, the Bears added two more runs to their total with a homer over the left field fence.

Following a brief scoring intermission in the third inning, the Bears cracked another home run to push their advantage to 9-1 in the fourth.

For the third consecutive inning, Mercer recorded another home run to extend its lead to 12-1 in the fifth.

During the sixth, it looked like the hosts were going to strike again after they put a Bear on second and third with zero outs. Thanks to a groundout to short and Eric De Costa recording back-to-back strikeouts, UWG escaped the frame unscathed and finished the game on a high note.

The Wolves fell 12-1 through seven frames.

Starting pitcher Wilson Donnelly was tagged with the loss. The sophomore now posts a 0-4 record on the season. Tonight, he struck out three batters and conceded five runs in three frames.

UWG baseball returns home to host North Florida this weekend in a three-game ASUN series. First pitch from Cole Field is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
