Softball Falls in Pair of Two-Run Decisions at Troy

TROY, Ala. - The UWG softball team fell in two tightly-contested contests at Troy on Wednesday, falling 2-0 in game one and 6-4 in game two.

West Georgia (11-30) took a game to get the bats going, and recorded 10 hits in game two against Troy (25-13), but in the end left two runners in scoring position in the final frame of game two, dropping both games of the midweek, non-conference action.

GAME ONE
West Georgia's offense was shutout and limited to just one hit over seven innings in game one. Troy's Esmee Ames fanned eight batters and allowed just two baserunners in a complete game gem.

Troy struck first, using small ball and base stealing to set up the game's first run on a wild pitch. Three walks and a single scored the second run in the third for the Trojans, and they attempted a third run in the fifth but Megan Waites threw out the runner at the plate to keep it at 2-0.

That's how it would end as UWG had a baserunner in the sixth, but never got anything going.

Jenna Samuel had the Wolves' lone hit, a leadoff single in the fourth.

Cacie Cutright took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs. Delaney Hoyle pitched the final 0.2 innings of the game to escape a sixth-inning jam.

GAME TWO
The nightcap started similarly with Troy leading 2-0, but this time it was four hits in the opening inning that yielded the two runs for the Trojans.

Unlike game one, however, the Wolves had baserunners in four of the first five frames, and finally got on the board in the fifth. Two singles and an error put runners on first and second, and sophomore Ally Long then provided a pinch hit, infield single that careened off the glove of the Troy pitcher that plated two runs to tie the game at 2-2.

Troy responded right away with two runs to break the tie in the bottom half, taking advantage of a dropped third strike, an error, and a single.

A two-run home from the Trojans' Kamryn Munson extended the advantage to 6-2 through six innings.

Jenna Samuel made it 6-3 after picking up an RBI-single in the top of the seventh. After Sky Ramos worked a walk, Cacie Cutright ripped a pinch hit double to the left center gap, scoring Samuel and cutting it to a 6-4 deficit. The Wolves then brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out and could not get any additional runs across, falling for the 10th consecutive game.

Ella Oswalt, Madison Humber, and Mickey Coslor each had two hits to lead the Wolves while Ally Long provided the only multi-RBI game for UWG.

Hoyle pitched 5.2 innings of the game and took the loss while striking out two.
