CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team fell in both ends of Friday's doubleheader against Queens, dropping an extra innings game, 4-3, in the opener before an 8-3 defeat in game two.
West Georgia (14-38, 6-17 ASUN) rallied in the opener to force extras before ultimately falling by one run in eight innings. Queens (14-33, 6-17 ASUN) never trailed in game two and scored in each of the first three innings.
GAME ONE
West Georgia struck first, using infield singles by Megan Waites and Zekylah Boyd along with a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the fourth inning when Lindsay Henson slugged her 16th home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
The Wolves had their own costly error, a two-base error that allowed the second Queens run to score, and then the Royals went up 3-1 on a sacrifice fly.
UWG trailed in the seventh, but Bekah Johnson led off with a pinch hit single and then a double by Kristen Fowler put two in scoring position with no outs. Boyd then doubled both home but was thrown out trying to leg out a triple, and the game went to extras tied, 3-3.
A leadoff double by Queens in the eighth and two singles would be all they would need as they took a 4-3 lead and then Kooper Barnes came in and slammed the door in the bottom half.
Boyd had two of the Wolves' six hits and also stole a base. Dixiana Sims pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs with six strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Wolves managed just five hits in the second game, and two of those came in the first and coupled with two errors, the Wolves scored twice to match the Royals and tie things up after one.
Queens then one in the second and three in the third to go up 6-2 and another Queens error gave one back to the Wolves in the bottom of the fourth.
The Royals scored twice more in the sixth and finished the game with eight hits and three triples.
Cacie Cutright took the loss in the circle for the Wolves and recorded UWG's only RBI at the plate.
