UWG Drops Game One to North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fl - The West Georgia baseball team lost 6-5, Thursday night at Harmon Stadium. 

Though giving up three runs in the first inning, UWG (13-39, 10-18 ASUN) battled back taking the lead in the sixth, but UNF (29-22, 20-8 ASUN) scored three runs in the seventh to retake the lead and ultimately take game one, 6-5.

The Ospreys scored first in their opening frame, taking advantage of two walks and an error to plate three runs on just one hit.

The Wolves responded in the second by drawing two leadoff walks of their own, and an RBI groundout by shortstop Blane Schmitt to put UWG on the board and cut the deficit to two.

UWG evened the score at three apiece in the third inning as Gabe Wuerth and Patrick McCullough launched back-to-back solo shots over the right-field wall.

The Wolves broke through in the sixth after a quiet couple of innings from both sides. Catcher Mason Cooper led the inning off with a single. With two outs Fano Cruz launched a double to left field to score Cooper and give UWG their first lead of the game.

McCullough stayed hot at the plate scoring Wuerth on a single up the middle extending the lead to two runs. The Ospreys answered in the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs of their own off of one hit, taking the lead 6-5.

Though struggling early in the game, Wolves' starting pitcher Luke Ridley settled in nicely, striking out five batters and pitching six innings. Ridley was ultimtely tagged with the loss, as UWG fell 6-5.

Game two of the series is set for tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, FL. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
-Wuerth's solo homerun gives him six on the year.

-McCullough's three hit game extends his on-base streak to 33 games and his hit streak to 15 games.

-Davis Williams pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief, striking out one batter.
