Wolves Suffer Series Opening Loss

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast's hot start was too much for the West Georgia baseball team to overcome in Friday night's road series opener, resulting in a 7-6 loss for the Wolves.

On the back of Eagles' (31-17, 14-10 ASUN) catcher Jon Embury's three-run, three-RBI contribution and a stingy pitching performance by Evan Dempsey, UWG (13-35, 10-15 ASUN) found themselves down 7-0 early. The Wolves responded by scrapping six consecutive runs with three coming in the ninth, but would ultimately fall short in their rally.

Opening with a solo homer over left field in the first, the Eagles built their 7-0 over the opening four frames by tallying a second homer, and a pair of RBI singles and sacrifice flies.

Down big in the fifth, UWG got on the board thanks to a run-scoring triple from Jacob Bowman, marking the shortstop's first career three-bagger. Gabe Wuerth added the tally by driving Bowman home with a double into right field, dashing the hosts' lead to 7-2.

Following a scoreless sixth, David Bell broke the drought with an RBI single to left to cut the FGCU advantage to 7-3.

Suffering only one out on their way to loading the bases, UWG put themselves in great position to score in the ninth. In the first at-bat with the bags loaded, Patrick McCullough added a run with an RBI single. Bell followed it up with another RBI base hit to put the score at 7-5 in the hosts' favor. Landon Weidner added one more run but conceded the out on a groundout RBI in doing so. Unfortunately, West Georgia's rally would stop here, resulting in a 7-6 loss for UWG.

The Wolves return to Swanson Stadium on Saturday to face off against the Eagles in game two. First pitch is set for 5 p.m., and the live streaming links are tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
-Starting pitcher Luke Ridley was tagged with the loss. In four frames, he struck out two Eagles and conceded six earned runs.
-In three frames, Josh Lanum gave up only one hit and struck out one batter.
-Finishing the night with two hits, McCullough has now reached base in 30 straight games.
