UWG Volleyball Falls to GSU in Five Sets

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia volleyball suffered their first loss of 2026 on Friday night, falling 3-2 to Grambling State in The Coliseum after taking the first and fourth sets.

Recording a career-high 19 kills, Valiree Schmus led the Pack and tied her career-high with 20 points. Brooke McCall broke into double digits for the first time in her career, finishing with 13 points from 13 kills.

West Georgia's second matchup of the day saw the Pack fall behind early after making consecutive attack errors. Continuing to stay hot from the season-opener, Schmus began pushing the Pace for UWG, settling in to record three early kills and give the Wolves a tight advantage. With momentum now on West Georgia's side, the Pack strung together an 11-3 run extending its lead to 15-9. Despite the Lady Tigers cutting their deficit down to just three, the Wolves held on to secure a first set win, 25-20.

Similarly to the opening set, the Wolves and Lady Tigers traded blows through the first few volleys with neither team being able to create a cushion on the board. That was until a pair of UWG set errors sparked a 4-0 GSU run to give the visitors a 10-6 lead. Grambling continued to capitalize on UWG mistakes to grab their biggest advantage of the day, up 17-9. Even with UWG stringing together a 3-0 run, it was too little too late. The Wolves fell in set two 25-17 with 12 errors tacked against them.

GSU kicked off the third set jumping out to a 5-0 lead, but the Wolves continued to battle despite the early deficit. Led by Grace-Blythe Cornett and Milena Ćetković, the Pack clawed their way back to lock the game at 12 points apiece. Schmus joined in on the fun, scoring four consecutive kills for the Wolves to bring the score to 17-17. Taking a page out of Schmus' book, Cornett tallied three consecutive points for the Pack to keep the game locked at 21-21. Unfortunately, the visitors ended the set scoring back-to-back points to take a 25-23 win.

With the Wolves' backs against the ropes down 2-1, UWG jumpstarted the fourth set grabbing a 10-6 lead thanks to a handful of costly errors by GSU. Schmus and Cornett continued to add to their already impressive totals to keep the Pack out in front despite Grambling State's counterattack. Up 20-18, Schmus tallied two more kills to help UWG secure a 25-19 win and force a fifth set.

The fifth set opened with the two teams swapping  points until a pair of UWG errors gave GSU a 10-7 lead and forced the Wolves to call a timeout. Unfortunately, West Georgia wasn't able to get enough going to dig themselves out of the hole, resulting in a 15-11 loss.

The Wolves return to The Coliseum tomorrow to close out the UWG Tournament with a matchup against Presbyterian College at 4 p.m. Live stats and ESPN+ links are tagged on the UWG volleyball schedule.
