CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia (1-2) fell to Presbyterian College (3-0) Saturday in the Wolves' only match of the day while Presbyterian was competing in their second match after defeating Northwestern State.
Set 1
The Wolves jumped on PC early after Valiree Schmus led the match off with a service ace and West Georgia held the lead all the way up until the 13
th point. The Blue Hose slowly got back into their groove thanks to senior outside hitter Ashley Miller, who tallied five total kills in the set. The Wolves could not climb their way back, and Presbyterian closed out the set with a final score of 25-18.
Set 2
Nearly mirroring the first set, the Wolves found themselves down early to Presbyterian, with the score sitting at 3-11 early on. The Pack still managed to fight their way back into the match, not making a single receiving error this set, cutting their deficit to 18-12, but the effort was not enough to hold off PC, who took the set 25-17. For the Wolves, McCall, Cornett, and Schmus added two kills each to their totals.
Set 3
Looking at a two-set deficit, the Wolves came out swinging, once again behind sophomore Valiree Schmus, who helped lead an early rally to grab the first four points of set three. Maddy Kirmer then helped extend the lead to 11-5 with a kill following multiple back-and-forth volleys between the two clubs. After a failed challenge from Presbyterian, the Wolves then continued to pull away, pushing the lead to 17-13. UWG kept the pressure on, forcing PC to burn a timeout with the score at 20-16. The Blue Hose fought back to tie things up at
22-21, prompting a West Georgia timeout of its own. A Presbyterian service error then put the Wolves back on top 23-22, leading PC to call another timeout. West Georgia held off a late Blue Hose rally to then close out the set 25-23.
Set 4
Presbyterian jumped out to an early lead behind Emma McHatten, building a 5-1 lead. The Wolves struggled to string together any points early on, falling behind 15-6. Behind the serving of
Adriana Medrano, West Georgia put together a five-point rally to cut their deficit to 15-11. Presbyterian answered with another rally to pull ahead 20-16 and closed out the set 25-18, winning the match.
The Wolves hit the road this weekend to take on Kennesaw State and Alabama A&M this Friday at KSU, before heading into Atlanta to face off against Georgia State on Saturday.
