Wolves Kick Off Classic with 3-1 Win

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Fueled by outside hitters Valiree Schmus, Brooke McCall and Grace-Blythe Cornett's double-digit performances, West Georgia (2-5) opened the UWG Volleyball Classic, securing a 3-1 win over Gardner-Webb (4-4) at The Coliseum on Friday.

Schmus led the Pack with 18.5 points on 17 kills, followed by Cornett with 17.5 points from 16 kills and McCall with 16 points from 14 kills. See what Cornett had to say about today's performance by clicking the video link at the bottom of the page.

SET ONE
Powered by a pair of kills from Schmus and two Gardner-Webb attack errors, the Wolves kicked off the weekend jumping out to a 6-3 advantage, forcing the Runnin' Bulldogs to call a timeout in the action. Following the break, GWU went on a 3-0 run to lock the game at 6-6. Over the next few volleys, the two teams traded points until another 3-0 GWU scoring run out of the media timeout gave the visitors a 18-15 advantage. Following the Wolves' first timeout of the day, UWG strung together four points in a row to knot the match at 19-19. Powered by two late kills from McCall, the Wolves went on to take a 25-23 set one win. 

SET TWO
Just like the opening set, the second was a neck-and-neck battle that featured scoring swings between the two teams. On the race to the double-digit mark, the match was tied five times, with Cornett pushing the pace with four early kills in the set. Coming off a successful challenge call by head coach Adam Milewski, the Wolves tallied back-to-back scores to push to a 15-12 advantage. Capturing points off UWG mistakes, GWU would storm back and overtake a 18-17 lead, but the Pack was not out of the fight. The two squads finished the set going back and forth in scoring until a three-point UWG scoring run, highlighted by a Schmus solo block, resulted in a 25-23 set two victory for the Wolves.

SET THREE
Set three continued to stay as competitive as any match that the Wolves have played this season. The set was tied five times before a 3-0 GWU scoring flurry gave the visitors a 14-11 lead over the Pack. Courtesy of back-to-back blocks by Cornett and middle blocker Milena Ćetković, the Wolves raced back to tie the match at 13 apiece. Staying deadlocked, GWU capitalized on a kill and a pair of points from UWG errors to push their lead to 21-17. Despite the Wolves battling back to knot the match at 24-24, the Runnin' Bulldogs tallied two points from UWG attack errors to grab their first set win of the day and force a fourth. 
 
SET FOUR 
In the fourth set, UWG jumped out to a 5-0 lead and quickly forced a Gardner-Webb timeout. Out of the stoppage, UWG went on a 6-2 run, causing GWU to call another timeout with the Wolves up 11-2. By the media break, UWG built a 15-5 lead before cruising to the 25-11 victory in the set to clinch the match. The Wolves hit .579 in the set, the highest of any set in the match, and forced nine GWU attack errors to secure their first victory since the season opener. 

The Wolves' next match has the Pack taking on LSU New Orleans later today at 6 p.m. in The Coliseum.
