KENNESAW, Ga. - In the second match of Friday's road swing, West Georgia volleyball was handed a 3-0 loss by the Kennesaw State Owls, finishing the day 0-2.
Following a tight opening set in which KSU (3-1) edged out the Wolves (1-5) 25-23, UWG struggled to get anything going in the second set, falling 25-9, before ending the match losing 25-21 in the third.Â
For the second straight match, outside hitter Brooke McCall led the Wolves, finishing with 11 points from 11 kills.Â
SET ONE
The opening set of the Wolves' second match of the day was a back-and-forth affair, featuring nine ties and four lead changes as the teams reached double digits. After UWG hit this mark, the Wolves extended their advantage to 13-11 following a pair of kills from right side hitter Grace-Blythe Cornett and outside hitter Valiree Schmus. The KSU Owls would respond with a 6-1 swing to jump out in front 17-14. UWG was able to close the gap to just one point before KSU rebounded with another 3-0 run powered by two kills and a Wolves' service error. Coming out of a timeout down 22-18, the Wolves capitalized on three consecutive Owl errors to put themselves in prime position to overtake. Unfortunately, UWG would run out of chances before KSU secured a 25-23 victory.
SET TWO
Carrying the momentum of the opening set, KSU jumped out to a 8-3 lead to start the second. A kill from McCall and a KSU attack error cut the deficit down to 9-4, but the Owls were just getting started. With the Wolves struggling to attack cleanly, KSU closed out the set on a 16-5 run to win 25-9 over UWG.Â
SET THREE
Despite the tough second set, UWG continued to fight in the third. With four different Wolves tallying a kill, West Georgia opened the set grabbing a 6-3 lead. Going one-for-two with the Owls on points, KSU recovered by the time the Wolves reached double digits. With McCall, Cornett and Schmus each tallying kills, UWG traded points with KSU but the Pack began running out of momentum at the 16-point mark. KSU would capitalize on a handful of West Georgia errors to balloon their lead before ending on a 3-1 run to win 25-21.
