CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia women's soccer team (0-4-1) fell 1-0 to Western Carolina (2-4-1) on Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Field, as the Wolves celebrated Senior Day in front of 364 fans.

Prior to kickoff, UWG recognized its five seniors, midfielder and team captain Mikaela Rossi, defender Ava Maldonado, goalkeeper Siani Jones, forward Katherine Hagans and midfielder Noemi Casique, for their contributions to the program.

The Wolves came out as the aggressors early, creating several opportunities in the opening minutes. Casique recorded UWG's first shot on target before Hagans appeared to give the Wolves an early lead. However, after review, the goal was ruled offside and the score remained 0-0.

Both teams continued to battle defensively throughout the opening half, with the match remaining scoreless at the break. UWG goalkeeper Jones, making her first start of the season, recorded a season-best 90 minutes in goal. Freshman Giuliana Kostick also recorded the first shot on target of her collegiate career during the opening half.

The defensive battle continued into the second half before Western Carolina broke through in the 69th minute. Erika Gariepy found the back of the net off a corner kick to put the Catamounts ahead 1-0. The goal was reviewed and ultimately confirmed, giving Western Carolina the advantage.

UWG looked for an equalizer but was unable to generate consistent offensive pressure following the goal. Freshman Jessie Findley recorded the Wolves' lone shot on target of the second half, marking her first shot attempt of the season.

Western Carolina controlled much of the possession in the second half and outshot UWG 7-2 during the final 45 minutes. The Catamounts' defensive effort held the Wolves scoreless through the final whistle as Western Carolina secured the 1-0 victory.

The Wolves return to action Thursday, Sept. 10, welcoming Georgia State to University Soccer Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. UWG will then travel to Kennesaw State on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. for its final nonconference match of the 2026 season.
