This meeting will mark the 31st time in the history of the series that the two teams will meet on the gridiron and the 13th time since the inception of The Peach Basket, which goes to the winner of the UWG-VSU game each season. Valdosta State holds a 21-9 advantage in the history of the series and won the last meeting, 42-7 last year in Carrollton.
Both teams come into Saturday's game with four wins on the year. West Georgia is 4-2 and 1-1 in GSC play and is coming off of a tough 38-21 road loss at North Alabama last weekend. Valdosta State is 4-1 and 2-1 against conference opponents and the Blazers are also coming off of a tough road loss, 49-30 at the hands of No. 11 West Alabama last weekend.
West Georgia has a balanced offensive attack that leans on a powerful running game behind a veteran offensive line. The Wolves have rushed for at least 200 yards in four of the six matchups this season, including hitting for 250 yards last weekend against UNA.
Seth Hinsley leads the UWG rushing attack with 401 total yards on the year on 59 carries, a 6.8 yards per carry average. Senior
Quan Jones is just behind that with 77 carries for 395 yards on the year, a 5.1 yards per carry average.
Valdosta State is also solidly balanced in their offensive attack this season, rushing for 211.6 yards per game and passing for 219.6 yards per contest. Their biggest offensive output came against Angelo State in the third week of the year, when the Blazers had 455 yards of total offense.
VSU also has a pair of dangerous backs in Cedric O'Neal and Austin Scott. The running backs are 2nd and 3rd in the GSC in rushing yardage per game this season. O'Neal has 54 carries for 466 yards and three touchdowns on the year and Scott has 49 carries for 436 yards and five scores. Both are averaging just under nine yards per carry.
