2013 Football Preview: The UWA Game

Carrollton, GA - Week eight of the 2013 football season brings the UWG Wolves to a tough fork in the road. With four games remaining on the schedule, the Wolves are still in the hunt for a spot in the NCAA region playoffs, but with only three of the four contests as in-region games, West Georgia will likely have to win out to be in the conversation.

That starts on Saturday at West Alabama, as West Georgia plays its fourth Gulf South Conference opponent of the season and the fourth team that has been ranked at one point this season. The Wolves are 4-3 on the year and are coming off of an emotional loss to in-state rival Valdosta State last week.

West Alabama is 5-2 and are also coming off of a tough loss, as the Tigers fell to 24th-ranked Midwestern State last weekend. UWA entered the game as the eighth-ranked team in Division II, but the Lone Star Conference is tough, especially at home, as MSU won 45-21.

The Wolves and UWA are both giving up 22.3 points per game on the year. West Georgia averaging 31.6 points per game this season, while West Alabama leads the Gulf South Conference with a 45.4 points per game average. The Tigers average 529 yards of offense per game and have rushed for over 2,000 yards this season while passing for just over 1,600.

West Georgia is averaging 385 yards per game on the year and the Wolves have rushed for just under 1,500 yards this season while passing for just over 1,200 yards. In terms of yards, UWG is leading the GSC in yards given up per game at 322.9, just ahead of UWA at 328.4.

The top two rushing teams in the GSC also have two players each in the top-10 in the conference in rushing, led by UWA's Kedrick Rhodes, who is second with 89.1 yards per game. The Tigers' Javae Swindle is fifth in the league in rushing with 68 yards per game.

For West Georgia, Seth Hinsley leads the way with 63.1 yards per game on the ground, good for seventh in the GSC. He is followed closely by Quan Jones, who averages 60.1 yards per game on the year and Jones also has six rushing touchdowns. That number is tied for second in the conference with Rhodes and Gary Johnston, both of UWA.
