UWG running game shines against GSC newcomer

Carrollton, GA - The UWG offensive line stepped up to the challenge Thursday night at University Stadium, as the Wolves used a powerful rushing attack to take down Gulf South Conference newcomer Florida Tech in the Halloween edition of the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week by a 28-14 margin.

West Georgia rushed 54 times on the night for 303 yards, marking the fourth time in the past two seasons that UWG has gone over 300 yards rushing in a game. The previous time this season was against Point on October 5. The Wolves came close against Miles in the home opener, but finished with 296 in that game.

The first six minutes of the game were owned by West Georgia, as the Panthers took the opening kick and were unable to muster anything offensively on their first drive. After a three-and-out and a punt, the Wolves took over at their own 42. It took 10 plays to move 58 yards, but in the end, #Austin Trainor# connected with #Bobby Burum# for a 13-yard score and a 7-0 lead just six minutes into the game.

That was the bulk of the scoring early in the game, as the next touchdown in the game came with just over seven minutes remaining in the second quarter, with Florida Tech tying the score with a three-yard touchdown pass.

Florida Tech's score kicked off a flurry of activity to end the first half, as West Georgia responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ate nearly 6:00 on the clock. Of the 12 plays, 11 were running plays, but the pass was one of the most spectacular of the night, as #Dallas Dickey# found #Denarius Appling# for a 27-yard reception on a 3rd-and-14 during the drive. The drive concluded with #Seth Hinsley# pounding in from four yards out for the score and a 14-7 lead.

On the ensuing drive, #Delontae Amey# picked up his first career interception and gave the offense a chance to go 42 yards with a minute to play in the half. Trainor and Burum hooked up again, this time nearly for a touchdown, as Burum drug two people while trying to score. The senior was stopped just shy of the goal line, but #Quan Jones# finished off the drive with four seconds left in the half, giving UWG a 21-7 lead.

After the half, Florida Tech pulled to within a touchown of the Wolves as the FIT defense kept the UWG offense at bay for the bulk of the second half. The Panthers scored on their first drive of the second half, pulling to within a touchdown with a four-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Vega to Xavier Milton, making the game 21-14.

But with 5:08 remaining in the contest, the Wolves began a four-play, 77-yard drive that closed out with #Earvin Agnumba# hauling in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Trainor. The UWG defense finished out the game without allowing another score.

Jones rushed for 136 yards in the game, breaking the century mark for rushes for the third time this season. Junior #Seth Hinsley# just missed the 100-yard mark, busting out for 91 yards rushing in the game. Burum was also solid on the night, picking up four receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive front, #Tyrell Adams# led the way with 12 tackles, including two for a loss.

The Wolves will travel to Canyon, TX next week for the final UWG game of the year in the GSC-Lonestar challenge, as the Wolves will take on national power West Texas A&M next Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
