Wolves blast Point in Homecoming victory

Carrollton, GA - For the first time since 2001, the UWG football squad is 4-1 thanks to a 49-3 lambasting of Point University Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.

The Wolves were dominant in every phase of the game against the Skyhawks, putting up more than 600 yards of offense for just the second time in school history and the 612 yards of total offense that the Wolves had on Saturday was the second-most all-time at West Georgia. The top game was a 640-yard output in 2000 against Presbyterian.

On defense, the Wolves gave up just 186 yards of offense in the game and the lone field goal that was scored came off of a turnover in the second half that gave Point the ball at the UWG 3. West Georgia's defense allowed nothing after that, forcing the Skyhawks to kick a field goal.

On special teams, #Denarius Appling# struck for the fifth time in his career, returning the first punt of the game 68 yards for the first score of the game for the Wolves. It was his fifth punt return for a touchdown in his career, the first since 2011 and the fourth-longest.

After stopping the Point offense in short order, the offense went back to work, using seven plays to go 51 yards in 2:35. #Quan Jones# broke through the defense from six yards out to cap the drive with the second touchdown of the game for UWG, his fifth rushing score of the year.

With the score 14-0, the UWG defense made quick work of Point, giving the ball back to the offense. With 7:21 left in the first quarter, sophomore quarterback #Dallas Dickey# was flushed out of the pocked on third down, but the Carrollton high school product found Jones and hit him in stride going down the sideline. The play went for 83 yards and a touchdown, giving the Wolves a 14-0 cushion with the fourth-longest play in University Stadium history.

The Wolves added one more score in the second quarter, a four-yard strike from #Austin Trainor# to #Bobby Burum# to give West Georgia a 28-0 lead heading into the break at the half.

In the second half, #Seth Hinsley# picked up his third score of the year while #Derick Seward# and #Adam Holley# each had touchdown runs to close out the scoring for the Wolves.

Defensively, #Tyrell Adams# led the way again for the Wolves with seven tackles on the day. #Tory Slater# and #Terrell Brownridge# each had sacks in the game and West Georgia as a team had seven tackles for a loss, bringing the season total to 55 on the year, more than the entire 2012 season combined.

West Georgia moves to 4-1 on the season while Point falls to 2-3. The Wolves return to Gulf South Conference play next weekend, hitting the road to take on the North Alabama Lions at Braly Memorial Stadium.
